The XML Business Reporting Language (XBRL) is a standard for business and financial information reporting. It is based on XML so instance documents based on XBRL, e.g. a quarterly report, are highly constrained by the XML document-oriented nature. This makes more difficult to perform queries that mix information from filings from different dates, companies, or accounting principles than with a formalism based on a graph model instead of a tree model. Semantic Web technologies provide a graph model that facilitates mashing-up different XBRL sources. We have put into practice this approach mapping the XBRL filings available from the SEC’s EDGAR program to Resource Description Framework (RDF) and the XML Schema taxonomies these filings are based on to Web Ontology Language (OWL). The resulting semantic metadata, though highly tied to the XML structure it is mapped from, benefits from Semantic Web technologies and tools in order to facilitate integration and cross-querying, even together with other parts of the Web of Linked Data.

Chinese comics mostly appeared in the form of small rectangular pocket-books (ca. 13 x 9 cm) with stories containing a picture on the top and a short narrative on the bottom. They are called “chain(ed) pictures” lianhuanhua 连环画 or, alternatively, “small people’s books” xiaorenshu 小人书. These have been the dominant form of comic popular in China since the 1910s and, at least until the late 1980s They introduced generations of Chinese to literature as well as propaganda texts. Especially popular in the 1960s and 1970s, they were the dominating popular medium in everyday life and helped to form a cultural memory. Since the 1990s they have almost completely disappeared and can only be found in private collections today. Academic interest only gradually evolves with researcher focusing on individual artists or publishing systematic genre overviews. The Heidelberg collection is an attempt to join some of the scattered holdings in Germany to form a basis for future research. It comprises the scans of over 1200 comic books, which are combined with systematic metadata recordings and a basic contents analysis through keywords. The focus of our endeavor was on comics from the second half of the Cultural Revolution and immediately thereafter. In my presentation I will introduce the medium lianhuanhua, discuss aspects of metadata recording and database development, as well as report on an experimental approach to automatically detect visual objects in the images. Of the four V's of big data – Volume, Velocity, Variety and Veracity – the most challenging for the health sector is Variety. Health data comes from many sources, formats and standards – how can we bring these together to reap the benefits of big data technologies? Big Data Europe is tackling this challenge head-on, building a big data infrastructure flexible enough to tackle all seven Societal Challenges identified by Horizon 2020. Here we demonstrate our pilot implementation of Open PHACTS, which integrates life science data for drug discovery. 12 May 2017

Managing electronic resources has become a distinctive and important task for libraries in recent years. The diversity of resources, changing licensing policies and new business models of the publishers, consortial acquisition and modern web scale discovery technologies have turned the market place of scientific information into a complex and multidimensional construct. A state-of-the-art management of electronic resources is dependent on flexible data models and the capability to integrate most heterogeneous data sources. Python has been one of the premier, flexible, and powerful open-source language that is easy to learn, easy to use, and has powerful libraries for data manipulation and analysis. It’s easy to learn simple syntax is very accessible to new programmers and is similar to Matlab, C/C++, Java, or Visual Basic. Python is general purpose and comparatively easy to learn with an increased adoption for analytical and quantitative computing. For over a decade, Python has been used in scientific computing and highly quantitative domains such as finance, oil and gas, physics, and signal processing.

https://ucsb.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYod-ippz4pHtaJ0d3ERPIFy2QIvKqjwpXR FAIRy stories: the FAIR Data principles in theory and in practice The ‘FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship’ [1] launched a global dialogue within research and policy communities and started a journey to wider accessibility and reusability of data and preparedness for automation-readiness (I am one of the army of authors). Over the past 5 years FAIR has become a movement, a mantra and a methodology for scientific research and increasingly in the commercial and public sector. FAIR is now part of NIH, European Commission and OECD policy. But just figuring out what the FAIR principles really mean and how we implement them has proved more challenging than one might have guessed. To quote the novelist Rick Riordan “Fairness does not mean everyone gets the same. Fairness means everyone gets what they need”. As a data infrastructure wrangler I lead and participate in projects implementing forms of FAIR in pan-national European biomedical Research Infrastructures. We apply web-based industry-lead approaches like Schema.org; work with big pharma on specialised FAIRification pipelines for legacy data; promote FAIR by Design methodologies and platforms into the researcher lab; and expand the principles of FAIR beyond data to computational workflows and digital objects. Many use Linked Data approaches. In this talk I’ll use some of these projects to shine some light on the FAIR movement. Spoiler alert: although there are technical issues, the greatest challenges are social. FAIR is a team sport. Knowledge Graphs play a role – not just as consumers of FAIR data but as active contributors. To paraphrase another novelist, “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a Knowledge Graph must be in want of FAIR data.” [1] Wilkinson, M., Dumontier, M., Aalbersberg, I. et al. The FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship. Sci Data 3, 160018 (2016). https://doi.org/10.1038/sdata.2016.18

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. About authorWith two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.
