Eduu 552 primary and secondary sources coachella valley history
1. We will use Primary (1st) and Secondary (2nd) sources
to gather information about our Coachella Valley
BIG QUESTIONS:
1. What are Primary & Secondary sources?
2. Where do we find them?
CML JAFFE EDUU 552
2. Primary Sources Include:
• Original artifacts, objects, videos
• Original documents, speeches, letters
• Information written when an event is happening
Here we see Ben Franklin, John Adams,
and Thomas Jefferson writing the
Declaration of Independence
A copy of original Declaration is housed at
the National Archives, Washington, D.C.

Examples:
3. Secondary Sources Include:
• Biography (bio=life in Latin; we’ll talk about ‘graph’ later)
A biography is when you write about another person’s
life. Joseph Ellis wrote a biography on the life of George
Washington. This is a secondary document. It was
written about him after he died.

4. Secondary Sources can also
include:
• I tell you something – I am the primary source. Then, you
tell your family what I said, you are the secondary source.
• Information evaluating someone else’s research.
• Almanacs, encyclopedias, history books (textbooks), etc.
are all secondary sources because they were written
“after” the these events occurred.
