2. Introduction
• Christopher Stender, an experienced immigration attorney,
currently serves as a partner in a San Diego law firm.
Immigration attorney Christopher Stender has secured many
published decisions from the Board of Immigration Appeals
and won cases on appeal in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
On May 12, 2015, a group of law enforcement professionals
visited Capitol Hill to advocate for immigration reform. The
meeting included members of the Law Enforcement
Immigration Task Force, a group that convened in January to
promote legislation that protects immigrants and focuses
federal immigration enforcement efforts on those individuals
who pose a threat to public safety.
3. Immigration Reform
• The Task Force seeks to convince government that such reforms
would discourage criminal activity that preys on immigrants' fear of
deportation.
Several of the Obama administration's key immigration personnel
attended the group's May meeting, including Department of
Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and
Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske.
Officially termed a panel discussion, the meeting elicited statistics
from participants such as California's annual spending of $1.1
billion to house incarcerated unauthorized immigrants. Although
these statistics have gathered increasing support for the Task Force
among law enforcement professionals, administration operatives
urge caution in the face of a federal government that is divided on
the issue.
