The Power of Podcasting
                            By: Melissa Purcell
    What is podcasting?

-Podcasting is a way for students and parents to access
classroom information over the internet. Podcasting is
a great way for teachers to relay information to families
in a short amount of time.

    • Easy to use
    • Free
    • Large amounts of information can be given out in one setting
    • Enjoyable

Once you have gone through all four points, click on the arrow to explore another
form of technology!
Easy to Use
Podcasting is very simple! Teachers are able to
sign up on podcasting website, such as Audacity,
    and get their podcast started!

Once the podcast is made, teachers can post it
to a classroom blog for parents and students to
    listen to.

Free
Podcasting is free to use, which is always a good
thing! You just sign onto the podcasting website
    and get going!

Large Amounts of Information can be
            Given out in One Setting
Teachers are able to relay a wide variety of
information to students and parents via
podcasting. Teachers can podcast anything from
an online assignment for students, to a weekly
podcast of what is going on in the classroom for
    parents. The opportunities are endless!

Click on the arrow to go back to the podcasting page!
Enjoyable
Podcasting is fun and enjoyable to for both
teachers and students! It is great to way to
introduce a “new” technology to students.
Podcasting also provides another way of
teaching/learning to students that may need
    constant changes.

Using the Smart Board in Teaching
                  Students With Autism
By: Joy F Xin and Frank X Sutman
    What is a smart board?

A smart board is an interactive white board that is
used to enhance students’ learning by engaging
them in a different style of visual learning.
Students with Autism need to work on their social
situations and the Smart Board is a great way to
    motivate them!

Why are Smart Boards Good for
               Students with Autism?
Click on the text to learn more about Smart
    Boards.

    • Visual Learners
    • Motivation
    • Social Stories
    • Improved Student Behavior

Once you have gone through all four points, click on the arrow to explore another
form of technology!
Visual Learners
Children with autism are often lacking
    communication/interaction skills. They do not
always react to frustration and conflicts in a
positive way. The Smart Board is a great way for
these students to learn how to better handle
themselves in tough situations. They will enjoy
    using the Smart Board!

Click on the arrow to go back to the Smart Board page!
Motivation
Students with autism will be motivated to want
to try and better their social behavior if they are
able to use a Smart Board. The Smart Board will
portray the information to the students and they
will be able to interactively respond!

Click on the arrow to go back to the Smart Board page!
Social Stories
As mentioned, students with Autism need to work on
improving their social behavior. The Smart Board can play
a big role in this. Teachers can think of situations that the
students might find their selves in when it would be hard to
express their emotions in a positive way. Examples are,
conflicts, hard school work, and not getting their way.

The teacher would then type up a situation similar to this
and show it on the smart board. The students are able to
use the Smart Board to respond to the situation by drawing
pictures and writing their thoughts. After the activity, the
students have to practice modeling the good behavior.
Click on the arrow to go back to the Smart Board page!
Improved Student Behavior
As a result of the social stories, teachers will see
improved student behavior. The more the
students get to use the Smart Board to talk
about social situations, the more practice they
    will get.

Using Animation in Microsoft PowerPoint to Enhance
              Learners With Developmental Delay
By: Howard P Parette Jr, Jack Hourcade, Craig Blum

    What is PowerPoint?

PowerPoint is a Microsoft program that provides
an easy way for people to present information.

    • Presentation Features
    • Phonetic Awareness
    • Prompts

Once you have gone through all four points, click on the arrow to explore another
form of technology!
Easy Access
PowerPoint is a program that is very easy to
access. According to the article, as of 2009,
more than 80% of school computers contained
PowerPoint. PowerPoint is also very fun and
    easy to use.

Click on the arrow to go back to the PowerPoint page!
Presentation Features
   PowerPoint contains many fun presentation
features that excite children with developmental
delays. Some of these features are colors,
animations, sounds, and slide transitions. These
help to keep young children engaged.

Click on the arrow to go back to the PowerPoint page!
Phonetic Awareness
PowerPoint has been proven to help young
learners with their phonics. Early childhood
teachers can choose words and students have to
decide which letter is the right sound beginning
of the word. Transitions and animations make
this process exciting. For example, teachers
could use animations to make the letters bounce
    into the PowerPoint.

Click on the arrow to go back to the PowerPoint page!
Prompts
PowerPoint allows teachers to give their
students’ “prompts.” For example, a teacher
puts up a word and the students have to choose
which letter is the beginning sound of the word,
The students would be given four choices. Some
time passes and the students cannot figure it
out. The teacher can use PowerPoint to make
two of the answers flash. This would help
prompt the students and give them a hint.

Podcasting Personal Reflection
I feel that podcasting is a great classroom asset. I plan on having a
blog for my classroom. This will allow me to post podcasts for parents
and students to listen to. I think that my students will enjoy listening
to the podcasts and parents will feel they help to keep them up to
date. I intern at several different elementary schools, and they us
    podcasts regularly.

The author of the article stated that “posting student-created podcasts
can be one of the best ways to allow parents and other Internet users
a glimpse into the classroom and all the wonderful learning
    opportunities that are taking place.”

I agree with this statement 100%. Parents need to be informed and
    engaged in classroom activities.

Click on the arrow to read the next reflection!
Smart Board Personal Reflection
I found the Smart Board article to be very interesting. I never thought
about how this type of technology could help children with Autism. I am
definitely considering using a Smart Board in my classroom and will use
the social situations approach to help students with emotional
    disabilities.

The author stated, “children with autism often are unable to read about
and understand social cues and situations, as well as to appropriately
respond to such social events. Thus, they often find it difficult to "read"
social behavior, and to infer the beliefs and intentions of others. This
impairment often leads to the deficits in social communication and other
    interactions with peers and adults.

I found this quote to be very eye-opening. I will definitely think about
how students with emotional disabilities think about things in a different
way and react well to hands-on/visual activities.
Click on the arrow to read the next reflection!
PowerPoint Personal Reflection
I agree that PowerPoint is a great way to relay information to students. I use
PowerPoint a lot, and plan on continuing to use it when I become a classroom
     teacher.

The author of the article brought up a good point. PowerPoint can be a
particularly powerful instructional technology PowerPoint and projectors
have been used in conjunction with direct instruction to successfully teach
phonological awareness skills to 4year-old students considered at risk. In this
work, classroom teachers implemented a DI approach using PowerPoint
templates and a projection system, while teachers in a comparison group
used only a standard phonological awareness curriculum paired with the
projection system. Ready-to-go PowerPoint templates were created to
support instruction of alliteration, rhyming, and initial sound fluency.”

I never would have thought to use PowerPoint to help students better the
phonetic skills. That is something I would love to try when I become a
     teacher.

  • 9. Using the Smart Board in Teaching Students With Autism By: Joy F Xin and Frank X Sutman What is a smart board? A smart board is an interactive white board that is used to enhance students’ learning by engaging them in a different style of visual learning. Students with Autism need to work on their social situations and the Smart Board is a great way to motivate them! Click on the arrow to learn more about Smart Boards!
  • 10. Why are Smart Boards Good for Students with Autism? Click on the text to learn more about Smart Boards. • Visual Learners • Motivation • Social Stories • Improved Student Behavior Once you have gone through all four points, click on the arrow to explore another form of technology!
  • 11. Visual Learners Children with autism are often lacking communication/interaction skills. They do not always react to frustration and conflicts in a positive way. The Smart Board is a great way for these students to learn how to better handle themselves in tough situations. They will enjoy using the Smart Board! Click on the arrow to go back to the Smart Board page!
  • 12. Motivation Students with autism will be motivated to want to try and better their social behavior if they are able to use a Smart Board. The Smart Board will portray the information to the students and they will be able to interactively respond! Click on the arrow to go back to the Smart Board page!
  • 13. Social Stories As mentioned, students with Autism need to work on improving their social behavior. The Smart Board can play a big role in this. Teachers can think of situations that the students might find their selves in when it would be hard to express their emotions in a positive way. Examples are, conflicts, hard school work, and not getting their way. The teacher would then type up a situation similar to this and show it on the smart board. The students are able to use the Smart Board to respond to the situation by drawing pictures and writing their thoughts. After the activity, the students have to practice modeling the good behavior. Click on the arrow to go back to the Smart Board page!
  • 14. Improved Student Behavior As a result of the social stories, teachers will see improved student behavior. The more the students get to use the Smart Board to talk about social situations, the more practice they will get. Click on the arrow to go back to the Smart Board page!
  • 15. Using Animation in Microsoft PowerPoint to Enhance Learners With Developmental Delay By: Howard P Parette Jr, Jack Hourcade, Craig Blum What is PowerPoint? PowerPoint is a Microsoft program that provides an easy way for people to present information. Click on the arrow to learn more about PowerPoint!
  • 16. Benefits of PowerPoint in the Classroom Benefits of using PowerPoint help students with developmental delays? Click on the text to learn more. • Easy Access • Presentation Features • Phonetic Awareness • Prompts Once you have gone through all four points, click on the arrow to explore another form of technology!
  • 17. Easy Access PowerPoint is a program that is very easy to access. According to the article, as of 2009, more than 80% of school computers contained PowerPoint. PowerPoint is also very fun and easy to use. Click on the arrow to go back to the PowerPoint page!
  • 18. Presentation Features PowerPoint contains many fun presentation features that excite children with developmental delays. Some of these features are colors, animations, sounds, and slide transitions. These help to keep young children engaged. Click on the arrow to go back to the PowerPoint page!
  • 19. Phonetic Awareness PowerPoint has been proven to help young learners with their phonics. Early childhood teachers can choose words and students have to decide which letter is the right sound beginning of the word. Transitions and animations make this process exciting. For example, teachers could use animations to make the letters bounce into the PowerPoint. Click on the arrow to go back to the PowerPoint page!
  • 20. Prompts PowerPoint allows teachers to give their students’ “prompts.” For example, a teacher puts up a word and the students have to choose which letter is the beginning sound of the word, The students would be given four choices. Some time passes and the students cannot figure it out. The teacher can use PowerPoint to make two of the answers flash. This would help prompt the students and give them a hint. Click on the arrow to go back to the PowerPoint page!
  • 21. Podcasting Personal Reflection I feel that podcasting is a great classroom asset. I plan on having a blog for my classroom. This will allow me to post podcasts for parents and students to listen to. I think that my students will enjoy listening to the podcasts and parents will feel they help to keep them up to date. I intern at several different elementary schools, and they us podcasts regularly. The author of the article stated that “posting student-created podcasts can be one of the best ways to allow parents and other Internet users a glimpse into the classroom and all the wonderful learning opportunities that are taking place.” I agree with this statement 100%. Parents need to be informed and engaged in classroom activities. Click on the arrow to read the next reflection!
  • 22. Smart Board Personal Reflection I found the Smart Board article to be very interesting. I never thought about how this type of technology could help children with Autism. I am definitely considering using a Smart Board in my classroom and will use the social situations approach to help students with emotional disabilities. The author stated, “children with autism often are unable to read about and understand social cues and situations, as well as to appropriately respond to such social events. Thus, they often find it difficult to "read" social behavior, and to infer the beliefs and intentions of others. This impairment often leads to the deficits in social communication and other interactions with peers and adults. I found this quote to be very eye-opening. I will definitely think about how students with emotional disabilities think about things in a different way and react well to hands-on/visual activities. Click on the arrow to read the next reflection!
  • 23. PowerPoint Personal Reflection I agree that PowerPoint is a great way to relay information to students. I use PowerPoint a lot, and plan on continuing to use it when I become a classroom teacher. The author of the article brought up a good point. PowerPoint can be a particularly powerful instructional technology PowerPoint and projectors have been used in conjunction with direct instruction to successfully teach phonological awareness skills to 4year-old students considered at risk. In this work, classroom teachers implemented a DI approach using PowerPoint templates and a projection system, while teachers in a comparison group used only a standard phonological awareness curriculum paired with the projection system. Ready-to-go PowerPoint templates were created to support instruction of alliteration, rhyming, and initial sound fluency.” I never would have thought to use PowerPoint to help students better the phonetic skills. That is something I would love to try when I become a teacher. Click on the arrow to view the works cited page!
