5. Salon Hygiene
As a Therapist salon hygiene is good practice for your
own health, your clients’ health and your colleagues
health
Beauty Therapy treatments demand close human
contact, so care must be taken to provide the
maximum protection against cross-infection
Micro-organisms – are organisms that are too small to
be seen by the naked eye, they can cause different
types of infection
6. Controlling Micro-organisms in the Salon
• Antiseptic - chemicals which destroy the growth of
micro-organisms on living tissues, helping to prevent
infection
• Autoclave – a piece of equipment that is used to
sterilise small metal equipment. It works by heating
distilled water under pressure to a higher
temperature than 100 Degree Celsius
7. Controlling Micro-organisms in the Salon
• Barbicide – a blue liquid chemical that kills bacteria
but not necessarily the spores, so reproduction may
still take place
• Ultraviolet cabinets – UV cabinets use an ultraviolet
light to destroy bacteria the tools we use. Tools have
to be clean and dry before putting into the cabinet,
and turned regularly because the rays only clean the
surface of the tool
8. Controlling Micro-organisms in the Salon
Sterilisation – is the complete destruction of all living
micro-organisms and their spores
Sanitisation – is a term relating to health and the
measures for the protection of health, that is to be
free of dirt and germs, and to be hygienic
