WHY?
Combat the natural decline in mental
acuity that comes with age.
Dr. Karlene Ball: entertaining activities
such as crossword puzzles or problemsolving questions improved brain
function.
Activities that require some
concentration and extra thought can
do the trick.
Source: Journal of the American Medical Association 2002; 288:2271-2281.
STAYING
MENTALLY
AND
PHYSICALLY
ACTIVE
REDUCES
THE RISK
OF
ALZHEIMER’S
DISEASE
BRAIN FITNESS
The general state of feeling alert, in
control, and productive. Having the
mental abilities required to function:

• in society
• in our occupations
• in the community
Human mental decline typically begins before 40
Unused parts of the brain stop working
Challenging the brain with new activities wakes up
new areas
Try things you don’t already do – an accountant
might study a new language
Challenging creates new pathways that appear to
become alternate routes when neurones die off in
middle and old age.
Research suggests- Reading to a small child
enhances mental development- Ongoing mental
stimulation provides some protection against mental
decline
How can you exercise and
challenge your brain ?

Exercising the brain
is doing anything
that makes you
think, such as
“what did I do last
Saturday?”
Swap TV for mind
games or a book
Read a paper

Avoid using calculators.
Play games that involve
memory (bridge) or
thinking ahead (chess)

Take up a new hobby,
learn a musical
instrument, study a new
language
Prepare for retirement as
a time for “ serious
leisure” , for a hobby or
activity that involves
“the whole being”

Notas del editor

  1. SLIDE 11   Brain fitness is improved by many lifestyle factors, and the Super Noggin program talks about all of them. One factor, physical exercise, has been shown to be the only way to stimulate neurogenesis, the growth of new neurons. Another factor, mental exercise, strengthens the connections between the brain cells we already have. In fact there is evidence to suggest that people who are mentally active may delay the onset of symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. (5)
  2. SLIDE 4 A fit brain has all the mental abilities necessary to function successfully in life. Brain fitness is the feeling of being alert, in control, and productive. It is a condition of individual peak performance – it has nothing to do with intelligence or IQ. Scientific research has demonstrated that the brain can maintain or even improve its function over the course of a lifetime. It’s a matter of keeping the brain fit by a number of healthy lifestyle choices.   Why is there currently so much interest in brain fitness? There are 3 main reasons.
