40. Other Interesting Facts I found about Thurgood Marshall Thurgood Marshall's great-grandfather was a former slave. As a freed man, his great-grandfather fought in the Revolutionary War.

41. Thurgood's mother was a teacher and one of the first black graduates of Columbia Teacher’s College in New York City.

42. Thurgood’s father, a porter and steward, was the first black to serve on a grand jury in Baltimore during the 20th century.

43. Thurgood Marshall graduated with honors from the famous black college, Lincoln University, in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Thurgood Marshall graduated from Howard University Law School in Washington, D.C. first in his class in 1933.

44. Thurgood worked as a lawyer with one of his most famous cases being Brown vs. Brown. He served as the first black solicitor general , which is the nation’s chief counsel or lawyer. Thurgood Marshall became the first black United States Supreme Court Justice.
