6. Where are we now?
6
David’s son, Solomon, became the next king.
The LORD blessed Solomon.
He was the wealthiest
and most powerful king
Israel ever had.
7. Poetic books
5 books
Job, Psalms, Proverbs,
Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon
Other books of the Bible were written during
the time of 1 Kings….
7
David wrote most of the Psalms.
Solomon wrote Proverbs, Song of
Solomon and Ecclesiastes.
8. THE NORTHERN KINGDOM
under King Jeroboam.
Its capital was located in Samaria.
This kingdom is called
the kingdom of ISRAEL.
THE SOUTHERN KINGDOM
under King Rehoboam (Solomon’s son).
Its capital was located in Jerusalem.
This kingdom is called the kingdom of JUDAH.
All the kings of Judah descended
from King David.
8
After Solomon,
the kingdom was divided into TWO parts:
9. The people living in
both of these
kingdoms turned
their hearts away
from the Lord, and
God had to judge
them.
9
10. God first judged
the wicked northern
kingdom of Israel by
sending the
Assyrians.
In 722 B.C. the
Assyrians conquered
Israel and carried
away the people as
captives.
10
11. Later God judged the
southern kingdom of
Judah by sending the
Babylonians under King
Nebuchadnezzar.
In 586 B.C. the city of
Jerusalem and the
temple were destroyed
by the Babylonians and
the Jews were carried
away to Babylon as
captives. 11
12. 12
In the book of Kings, we see that the priests
become less and less important.
The priests
were the ones
who were supposed to
teach God’s Word
to the people.
But most of the priests
failed to do this.
15. OBJECTIVES: It is the purpose of this
unit to enable you –
1 - to realize that
God does not leave you,
but that it is you
who leaves God.
15
16. 2 - to understand
that a good beginning
means nothing
when the end is bad
and far from God.
16
17. 3 - to learn from
Solomon's life
that having everything in life
is no substitute
for true faith
and the love of God.
17
18. 4 - to understand
what caused the split
of the Kingdom of Israel
into two kingdoms.
18
19. 5 - to understand
God's persistence
in attempting to keep
His people faithful
by sending them His prophets.
19
20. 6 - to discover
that leaders
have a tremendous influence
upon their followers
- either leading them to proper
worship in the true God
or leading them
into false worship or idolatry.

Today, we are looking at the second verse on the theme of PURITY. Peter, one of Jesus disciples in the New Testament is making a reference to the only ONE who could be completely pure….without sin. That is Jesus. Jesus was fully God and fully man, yet was without sin. Unlike us, we are fully human…fully man and full of sin. But Jesus was perfect, pure God. There was no sin in Him. He was the sinless, perfect, pure, Son of God. Because He is sinless, He cannot lie so there is no deceit in anything that He says and that means that the Bible, His Words, is completely true. So, you and I can take comfort in the fact that, God who cannot lie, has taken away your sins, made you pure in the eyes of the Father through the blood of Jesus and these Words and those in the Bible came from the One who committed no sin and had no deceit in His mouth.
This is a chart that shows the kings of Israel before and during the split. If you look to the far left, you will see the word, The Judges in a red circle. This was the time in Israel’s history when they were governed by the people God spoke through to guide them.
Do you remember the name of the female judge?
How about the judge who ended his vow to God by allowing a woman to shave his head?
Since the judges ended up being corrupt, the people no longer wanted a judge and cried out to the LORD for a King. Remember that they wanted to be like every other nation.
But what happens when we lose our identity in the LORD and reflect the world?
That’s what happened to Israel.
They would continue to lose their identity in the LORD and want to be just like the nations around them only they would also want the LORD to bless them in their broken relationship to Him.
Their desire to be like the other nations began with King Saul. Notice on the chart where he is located next to the word Judges with the red arrow. The tiny number next to the names of the kings indicated how many years they were king.
After the death of Saul, it should have been King David, but Saul’s son Ishbosheth was still alive. He was beheaded by someone who was seeking glory and as he bragged to King David, David had him killed for murdering a member of Saul’s family because David had promised Saul and his family protection.
Then, King David began his reign.
Notice the solid white time line for Saul and the short lived reign of his son. Compare that to the markings on the timeline for David’s reign. The key on the far left side below explains that the white area indicates that during the reign of the king, he had no relationship with the LORD nor did the nation of Israel. The timeline with markings in them, indicate that the King and the nation were faithful to God. Keep that in mind as we move forward with this timeline.
The next King after David was his son Solomon. Note how Solomon experienced a time of faithfulness and a time of unfaithfulness to the LORD. In fact, it appears on this timeline, that when Solomon died, he was not in faith! We will look at his life in future lessons.
Now at the end of Solomon’s life is where the split of the two nations occurs. The bottom time line that ended with King Solomon is now the nation of Judah. The top timeline is the nation of Israel.
Look across at the two lines. What do you notice?
The nation of Israel will be unfaithful to the LORD for the rest of its history as a nation. Judah on the other hand will have times of faithfulness and times of unfaithfulness. As the King was faithful, the people had a faithful example that encouraged their faith. Unfaithful leaders encouraged idol worship and deviant sexual behaviors which the people all too easily followed.
Now look at God’s Grace on both nations. Above the names of the Kings of Israel at the top, are the prophets. These are men whom the LORD spoke through to tell the people to repent of their idol worship and come back to Him. When they listened to the prophets and repented, God forgave and restored them. When they did not repent, God allowed events to happen in their lives to wake them up and bring them back! Since no one knows the exact moment of their death, many in Israel and Judah died unrepentant and away from the LORD. The same is true today. When you hear the LORD calling you to trust in Him and you reject it for the things of this world and the desires of your heart, you could die in unbelief and live out your eternity away from the LORD suffering in hell.
Note how their time as a nation ends in 722 B.C. God had warned the Kings and people of Israel that if they did not repent, He would send a wicked nation to take them into captivity (slavery) and they would lose the Promised Land. But Israel refused God as King and did not listen to Him through the prophets of Elijah, Elisha, Jonah, Amos and Hosea. So the LORD allowed their north east neighbors, the nation of Assyria, to invade their country. The Assyrians forced 10% of the Israelites to stay behind and live as Assyrians, giving up their Jewish heritage. The other 90% of the Jews were dragged back to Assyria with a ring in their nose with a rope through it. They were humiliated in front of the other nations as they were literally dragged like cattle.
Judah on the other hand, would have periods of time where they listened to the prophets and were faithful to the LORD. However, in time, they too would reject God’s message to repent. Go to the next slide and you will see what I mean.
Here you see that the nation of Judah continues even though the nation of Israel is no more because they were taken captive by the Assyrians. But note what happens in the nation of Judah in 586 B.C. They were taken captive by the Babylonians. The LORD had warned Judah as well. Note how many prophets the LORD sent toward the end. (Jeremiah, Habakkuk, Zephaniah and Nahum) The LORD knew when the end would come for them if they did not repent, but they did not. They refused to listen to the LORD through the prophets and in 586 B.C., King Nebuchadnezzar came and destroyed Jerusalem, the palace and the temple while taking the Jews away from the promised land to live in a foreign country, Babylon. Note God’s Grace during their time of exile in that he continued to send them prophets like Ezekiel, Daniel and Obadiah so they would repent. The LORD had not abandoned His people, they had abandoned Him! Yet the LORD kept His promise to bring about a descendant from the line of King David to save the world from sin. This would happen through a remnant (small group of faithful Jews) who would be allowed to return back to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple and the city using the enemies’ money! This was the restoration period on your chart. Note how there are no kings at this time. The period of Kings was over and Jerusalem would have governors appointed by God’s divine leading. Malachi would be the last prophet that the LORD would speak through for four hundred years. This takes you to the end of the chart where it says the four centuries between the testaments. Remember that the Bible is divided into two testaments or covenants (promises), the OLD and the NEW. During this period of silence the people would hear from the LORD through the Words written down from Moses through Malachi. At that time, they would have the books of the Old Testament that we have today. The four hundred years of silence would be broken when the angel came to Zechariah in the temple and announced the birth of the last prophet who would prepare the way of the LORD, John the Baptist. Then Mary would have an angel come to hear and announce that she was the one who would give birth to the Savior.
So this course will end with 400 years of silence and the Old Testament written for the people to read during those years. Next year, the silence will be broken as you study the New Testament.
In this slide, note the two red circles. The one to the North is the capital city of Israel known as Samaria. Some of you might recognize the name Samaritans??? That is because when the Assyrians took over the nation of Israel, the 90% they dragged out of Israel were replaced with 90% of the Assyrians thereby insuring that Israel would not rise up and rebel. Those 90% Assyrians intermarried with the 10% of the Jews left behind. The Jews became a hybrid and no longer their own people and were known as Samaritans. The Jews down in Judah despised them and called their relatives to the North, half-breeds or Samaritans. The hate went so deep that no respectable Jew would walk through Samaria. Now maybe you can see the deeper meaning in the story of the Good Samaritan in the New Testament. Remember too, that Jesus hates no one, and walked through Samaria bringing forgiveness to all! That was where he spoke to the prostitute at Jacob’s well! These are the events you will read about in the New Testament next year.
The second red circle is the capital of Judah, Jerusalem.
This shows how the tribes were divided when the split took place. Two nations would be in the south with Judah and the other 10 in the North known as Israel.
