LESSON PLAN
School subject: English
Lesson subject:Travel, food and learning
Topic/Concept:Cultural diversity
Language level: Intermediate (B1) – Upper-intermediate (B2.1)
Time:90 minutes
Language: Modal verbs of speculation, second conditional and FOOD, TRAVEL vocabulary
Activity: Watching three short films, speculating, speaking and writing
Materials:A3 paper (1 per pair/table), three short films and a PowerPoint presentation
Objectives:
1. Students practise speaking, listening and improve vocabulary concerning TRAVEL, LEARNING,
FOOD
2. Studentstalk about cultural diversity in the context of cultural uniqueness and specificity
3. Students get more open-minded, understanding, tolerant and less prejudiced, appreciating the
value of different cultures, nationalities
Procedure:
Activity 1:
Teacher asks students to think of the following questions: If you could travel to 11 countries in
44 days, which countries would you visit? Why is that so? What do you feel attracted by when
choosing a particular country? What would you do in each country?
Students walk around in the classroom and talk to every single groupmate/classmate. They take
notes on the beforehand prepared and handed in worksheets and ask each other to enumerate
at least a few countries. They collect the data and try to draw some conclusion, spot similarities
or bring out answers that stand out. A few students share the results of the task with the whole
group/class.

Activity 2:
Students watch a short one-minute called MOVE, which shows clips of 11 countries visited by
Andrew Lees in 44 days. Students try to name as many of the countries as possible.
http://vimeo.com/27246366
Activity 3:
Teacher asks students to discuss the following questions:What makes the countries you
recognized unique? What makes any country and its people special, worth appreciating? They
exchange their views in the group/class discussion.
Activity 4:
Teacher asks students to discuss in small groups what they could learn to do in each of the
countries (for example, you could learn to dance tango in Argentina or you could learn to make
paella in Spain) and what they could learn from its culture, history, inhabitants (based on
general knowledge of the countries and previous activity results). Students list their ideas
(writing, drawing, mind mapping) on the A3 paper.
Activity 5:
Students watch the second film LEARN in which Andrew learns different things in each country.
Students should watch the film and spot which things he learns, and then compare them with
their answers from the previous activity. They present their completed works.
http://vimeo.com/27244727
Activity 6:
Students revise food vocabulary by watching the slides in the presentation, where they
seefoodscapes (landscapes created using food) shot by photographer Carl Warner. Teacher
shows students a slide and asks them to identify as many different types of food as they can.
Teacher asks students what foods and dishes are typical in the 11 countries in MOVE and LEARN.
Students, in the same groups as previously, write down the names next to their LAERNING
examples.
