During the World Maker Faire New York 2013, I describe how a kit of craft-compatible circuit building materials, which I have been designed to familiarize non-technical audiences to learn about circuitry and novel materials, also provides new alternative avenues to teach color theory and painting techniques.I defend how the open source movement and the hacker/maker subculture by making accessible technology for creative amateurs have opened an innovative space for research on interdisciplinary perspectives of STEAM education. As an art teacher, I expand on new experimental opportunities for art education to engage in a creative context non-technical people learn technology.

  2. 2. 1. DEMOCRATIZATION OF TECHNOLOGY/DIY CULTURE movement born from communities of practice that have embraced “open source”, “hacker”, and “maker” thinking. 2. NEW OPEN TOOLKITS AND PLATFORMS such as Processing, Arduino have enabled artists and designers to develop software and hardware without requiring a high degree of specialist knowledge OPEN SOURCE AND RISE OF CREATIVE AMATEUR 1. Arduino Board 2. World Maker Faire NY 3. NYR Hackerspaces
  3. 3. 3. NEW DEFINITION OF MATERIALS /ONLINE OPEN TUTORIALS for computational and creative expression include e-textiles components, also known as soft circuits, and changing materials to enable creative expression. 1. 4. 4. TECHNOLOGY AS A MATERIAL FOR ARTS & DESIGN Visual E-Arts kit, set educaBvo para arBstas visuales
  5. 5. COLOR-USED IN ART FOR MANY REASONS Ex: evoke emoBons, to create depth / contrast & also lead a viewer through a piece of work as well as conceptual means. Color should always have a meaning when used in art.
  6. 6. ARTIST TEACHER = MAKER HOW WE CAN LEARN COLOR THEORY IN THE 21s Century?
  7. 7. SCIENCE ELECTRONICS SOFT CIRCUITS / PROGRAMMING VISUAL ARTS ARTIST TEACHER = MAKER NEW ALTERNATIVE ART LEARNING MATERIALS
