2. Zawisza Czarny came
from Garbow. He was
born in 1370, died in
1428 in Serbia. He was
the most famous Polish
Knight and nobleman, he
was invincible in
multiple tournaments.
3. During his life Zawisza
was regarded as a model
of’ knightly virtues. He
was brave, strong and
faightful. He always kept
his word. His friends
could rely on him in every
situation. He took care of
widows, orphants and he
helped poor and weak
people.
4. His emblem was a
black eagle as a sign
of strenght and three
precious stones.
5. He was a great
diplomat and
one of the friends
of Polish king
Wladyslaw
Jagiello.
He served his
king and
protected him.
6. In 1410 he took part in the
Battle of Grunwald
against the Teutonic
Order. After the battle he
proposed a peace treaty
between the King of
Poland and King
Sigismund of
Luxembourg of Hungary.
7. In 1416 he participated in
a tournament in
Perpignan in which he
defeated the well-
known invincible
knight John of Aragon.
This way The Black
Knight became a victor
and he gain great fame
among European
Knights.
8. His nickname The
Black is due to his
black hair and his
custom-made,
black armor
which is kept in
Jasna Góra
Monastery.
9. Zawisza became a
folk hero, famed
for reliability, and
loyalty. In Polish
language we have
a proverb „you
can rely on me as
on Zawisza”
