6. LESSONS & CHALLENGES
Lessons:
Inclusion of WASH in government Projects/Interventions such as
School Feeding Programme and educational infrastructure is critical
Collaboration with state actors/agencies provides recognition
and/or legitimacy to NGO interventions
WASH interventions in communities need to be
holistic/comprehensive for relevance, acceptance and impact
Challenges:
Inadequate financing/Delayed disbursement
Greater emphasis placed on software than hardware
Different donors with different bilateral agreements
Rising cost of materials & inputs
Inaccessibility of some communities at certain times of the year
7. RECOMMENDATIONS/WAY FORWARD
a) WASH should be made an integral part of every
human activity from the individual to national level
b) Provision of WASH facilities to serve as award to
deserving communities/institutions to induce
competition
c) ‘FIETS’ to serve as a guiding principle for
sustainability
d) Establish and/or strengthen functional community
structures to continuously follow-up on interventions
to ensure behaviour transformation
