Jumping off the waterfall - watch out for the rocks below! As agile adoption grows, more and more companies are finding themselves trying to transition from a waterfall-based product development approach to a more agile one. Success stories are easy to find from the great companies who get it right first time, but for most us that won't sound like our story. We'll take more than a few stumbles along the path and wonder what it is about us or our specific situation that means we're finding it so hard. Having led this transition within some of Ireland's busiest websites, we did parts of it well, but I'm going to focus more on the stuff we got very wrong - decisions we made that at the time seemed like both the smart and low risk thing to do but ended up being neither! It'll hopefully be a useful guide to potential pitfalls along the route if you're starting out on the same journey. And if you've already been through it, you may recognise more than a few of the rocks we hit along the way! The slides themselves are mainly intended as an aid for when I'm talking and may not work so well for anyone who didn't see the talk! Slides from my upcoming LSSC11 talk: More and more organizations want to become more agile these days. When the theory hits the shores of reality, few organizations can get to an idealistic agile feature team that does all testing within sprints, has no need for release-level processes, and where everything is fully automated continuous deployment style. Usually the testing organization is in the eye of the storm when talking about Big Batches, Wastes, ineffective handoffs and mountains of rework, as well as high transaction costs. I’ve recently been using Lean/Kanban flow based approaches to provide a way to evolve testing organizations to a more effective way of working, so that they can better support earlier feedback and higher flexibility. I will present this work as well as case studies from enterprise-level product development companies that are starting to use these approaches. One of the most persistent factors limiting the impact of user research in business is that projects often stop with a cataloging findings and implications rather than generating opportunities that directly enable the findings. We’ve long heard the lament “Well, we got this report and it just sat there. We didn’t know what to do with it.” But design research (or ethnography, or user research, or whatever the term du jour may be) has also become standard practice, as opposed to something exceptional or innovative. That means that designers are increasingly involved in using contextual research to inform their design work. Ongoing acceptance of design research has increased the ranks of designers and others who feel comfortable conducting user research. But analysis and synthesis is a more slippery skill set, and we see how easy it is for teams to ignore (more out of frustration than anything malicious) data that doesn’t immediately seem actionable. This workshop gives people the tools to take control over synthesis and ideation themselves by breaking it down into a manageable framework and process.

LeanKit's founding team had a strong Lean-Agile background from previous careers. So, in the early days of the company, we just instinctively did things in a Lean way with as few formal processes as any startup. But, like any growing company, we eventually did have to start clearly defining how we do things. And like anyone, we were tempted to become more bureaucratic - with lots of scheduling, coordination, meetings and estimates. Instead, we developed our FSGD (Frequent Small Good Decoupled) approach. This LeanKit way of working has provided our teams with a simple yardstick for making effective decisions without a lot of cross team scheduling and coordination. It has simplified abstract Agile concepts into something everyone easily understands and cheerfully applies on a daily basis. FSGD isn't a replacement for Kanban, Scrum, XP, etc. We strongly believe in and spend lots of time teaching our teams about the Kanban Method as well as standard Lean and Agile principles, tools, and techniques. But FSGD distills what we think are the key decision making elements of those methods into something everyone can remember. We apply this model to all of our teams: design, development, testing, operations, sales, marketing, finance, HR. Indeed, we believe that applying it as broadly as possible makes it work most effectively. Indeed, that's part of why the model doesn't reference software directly at all. It's meant to be generally applicable. One sub-concept included in the slides TLDR (Tested, Logged, Documented, Reviewed) is more specific to the technology context. We have seen significant improvements in our delivery speed across multiple teams since rolling out the FSGD approach. We want to help other people gain the same benefits. Bio: Jon Terry is co-Chief Executive Officer of LeanKit. Before LeanKit, Jon held a number of senior IT positions with hospital-giant HCA and its logistics subsidiary, HealthTrust Purchasing Group. He was among those responsible for launching HCA’s adoption of Lean/Agile methods. Jon earned his Global Executive MBA from Georgetown University and ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, and his Masters Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University. Data spaces in distributed environments should be allowed to evolve in agile ways providing data space owners with large flexibility about which data they store. Agility and heterogeneity, however, jeopardize data exchanges because representations may build on varying ontologies and data consumers may not rely on the semantic correctness of their queries in the context of semantically heterogeneous, evolving data spaces. Graph data spaces are one example of a powerful model for representing and querying data whose semantics may change over time. To assert and enforce conditions on individual graph data spaces, shape languages (e.g SHACL) have been developed. We investigate the question of how querying and programming can be guarded by reasoning over SHACL constraints in a distributed setting and we sketch a picture of how a future landscape based on semantically heterogeneous data spaces might look like.
