The resources and tools in schools are evolving to meet the unique needs of this generation. This presentation discusses the evolution of literacy and asks questions that will help us redefine for ourselves what we think about literacy and the importance of what SHOULD be taught in schools.

The technology misconception is that it is not about the technology.
We don’t teach blogging, wikis, podcasting for their sake, but for what they let us do.

We’re on a journey. However, we need to know that
In that movie, the “precious” ring was evil. In our cases, we must know that
most technologies are morality-neutral. It is how you use them that determines its use.
How many of you think cupcakes are good! Are they?
What about when it is used to hurt someone’s feelings?
Or how about when a compulsion to eat them makes a person obese? What do we do?
Ban cupcakes? That is preposterous! We teach people to be kind and to use cupcakes in good ways? Shouldn’t we do the same thing with?

We don’t ban scissors and they could kill someone! We teach kids not to run with them! To use them well and our schools are full of other dangerous weapons such as
Man. Men, women, boys, and girls can do irreparable harm, and yet we don’t ban humans. Instead, we teach the humans in our school out to behave appropriately. That is what we do in school and
We’re here to talk about Library 2.0, and yet to understand library 2.0, we must ask ourselves.
What is Web 2.0?
In the pioneer days, children were taught in one room schoolhouses and shared a slateboard and writing utensil, in fact
if you were in one of these classrooms, the chalkboard would have been your textbook and workbook.
Replaced this photo in Web 1.0 workshop
The Internet came along in the early 1990’s but only was an information source for schools because web pages were difficult to create and required knowledge of HTML programming. Because of the difficulty and expense, schools did not publish on the Internet, so this first internet is often called the read only internet or Web 1.0.

So, your students should already be able to read books and text on the internet. Hopefully, you have headphones and let them listen, because this involves additional senses, the question is can they
Now, we have entered a phase of the Internet called Web 2.0 or the Read/ Write web. Because of the decreasing cost of using electronic tools Students, teachers, administrators, and publishers are now turning in pen and paper and using a whole array of electronic tools

Write? Can they take photographs and share them? Record? Film? Create and connect with other students via educational networks?
The read/ write library lets us do the same thing – it is more than just about text but also about pictures, audio, videos and people – creating and writing.
All of these things are part of the fact that we are redefining literacy.
I listened to a book on the way here? Is that literacy.Book Shown: Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett – I recommend for adult readers only.
How about this person who listened to it on their mp3 player, posted the picture to Flickr and wrote a review. Notice that this person downloaded the book from Nisten NJ’s digital catalog.

This is how long it took me to get those responses – you saw librarians, teachers, consultants, from the US, Australia and Canada to respond and share their thoughts. But connection is more than just finding people, it is about connecting people.
Brian Crosby, who works with students in Nevada could have settled into a comfort zone that comes from 27 years of teaching, and yet, he reached out and used Skype to bring a child with leukemia into his classroom.

Now we’re going to talk about using tags to find digital artifacts, grade them, and manage your classroom. We’ll demystify the terms and translate them into practical classroom uses.
Humans are required to interpret the material on the internet – we are the ultimate processor of information. The greatest filter ever created is between the ears of our students. We cannot rely entirely on filters and must teach students how to effectively navigate these online spaces. That being said, while my student collaborate with dozens of countries, I believe
Elementary schools use private tools (free) tools like think.com to create private spaces for students to network all over the world. Cheryl Oakes from Maine works with this school and tells me she has enjoyed think.com for some time. In fact, my good friend Cheryl couldn’t be here tonight because she’s on Seedlings Bit By Bit on Edtechtalk.com right now – I hope that after tonight, you’ll listen to her new show at www.edtechtalk.com
Please share what you’re doing while I share what we’re doing to network educationally at our school this year.Private Ning – My students and I.School Wide Ning – parents, students teachers – also private.Public Nings for
We have public Nings for projects, but we’ve stopped building new ones because we’re using the groups feature more extensively. If you want to sign up to be a judge, please join the Ning http://flatclassroomproject.ning.com and then join the judges group – or the expert advisors group – everyone joins the project group. We don’t go on public ning’s until the 10th grade – after they have had 2 ½ semesters with me on our private spaces.
So let’s look at a few people who are inspirational? Ernie Easter in New Sweden Maine has had his 7th and 8th grade students partner with a local history museum to create a living history project. To document the stories of the people in his area – before they die. What a beautiful testimony and instead of giving Christmas presents to one another
instead of giving Christmas presents to one another, he connected his students to a battered women’s shelter and they gave gifts to a mother and her children. Instead of just focusing on each other – they learned something amazing. He gave them the gift of connection and yet, it goes further.http://bitbybitseedlings.ning.com/profiles/blog/show?id=806765%3ABlogPost%3A5562
Digital Citizenship education starts at a young age as we cover all of the aspects of digital citizenship with elementary education including topics of access, safety, digital citizenship, etc. in walled gardens or by adopting a webkinz and moving towards open participation in educational spaces during the high school years.
But the question remains, why do we need to change? My husband always says that the only people who like change are babies with dirty diapers and even then, they cry the whole time! (click on the baby for the Movie.)
And that is what I suggest for you to do today. Your assignment for this webinar today is to come up with your “Big Three” at the end of the webinar. Pick three things – start there!
