Come on Comcast! You guys are taking advantage of people by charging them a monthly fee for out of date technology. I no longer have a monthly lease fee AND I my connection speed is TWICE as fast.

Return Your Comcast Cable Modem – Save Money – Go Faster
If you are a Comcast customer you might want to reevaluate your
situation if you’re “leasing” one of their cable modems. You could
be going f aster and f or less money.
Let’s look at my situation. In the Mr. Technitude household we had
been leasing the “same” Comcast modem f or over 4 years. So when
you put a pencil to it that’s $7 multiplied by 48 months which ends
up being $336.00. Now if you f actor in the modem was “older”
technology and throttled in terms of speed what you have is a
situation that was not in my f avor.
One day I get an email notif ication f rom Comcast indicating they are
increasing the monthly leasing price of their cable modem f rom $7 to $8 per month.
It was in that moment I realized what an idiot I had been f or not paying attention to this situation and I was
ready to pull they plug.
Reality check – I had paid a whopping $336 dollars f or a modem that was worth about $60 dollars.
Solution – Buy a ARRIS / Motorola SB6121 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem f or $68 dollars.
Note: T he standard f or cable modems is called DOCSIS which stands f or Data Over Cable Service Interface
Specification.
ARRIS/Motorola SB6121 Modem Advantages
Faster perf ormance
No monthly Comcast modem lease payments
Disadvantages of Changing Modems
Comcast is NOT setup to handle this situation ef f iciently.
T here’s a high probability your new modem will not handshake with the Comcast system right out of the
box.
You will need to call Comcast to complete the installation.
You may need a mild sedative prior to talking to the Comcast tech support system.
My Set Up Experience
I unboxed the ARRIS/Motorola SB6121 and af ter setting it up restarted it a couple
of times but it did not want to connect to Comcast.
2. So, I called Comcast to see if they could help resolve why it was not connecting. I
had the modems mac address ready because I knew Comcast would ask f or it and
af ter providing it the tech hesitated f or a f ew moments and then indicated he could
see the modem trying to connect on his end.
Af ter a f ew more minutes the “tech” said, “looks like it’s not going to connect, it’s
probably def ective.”
Wait a minute… I just pulled this thing out of the box… what’s the probability of it
being def ective?
He then said, “It appears we are not going to resolve this now so lets set up an
appointment and have someone come and take a look at it.”
Maybe a little experimentation was in order
I decided to let the modem run all night to see if the connection problem would resolve
itself . Sure enough, next morning the modem had connected to Comcast and I there
was a Comcast activation screen waiting f or me to enter my Comcast account number.
Once I did the next screen indicated, “Your account is not authorized to access the
internet.”
Unbelievable
1st – It took ALL night f or the new modem to handshake and connect with Comcast!
2nd – Once it did connect the Comcast activation sequence told me my account was
not authorized to access the internet.
So I picked up the phone and called Comcast once again to get this settled. You won’t
believe what he said. “It appears you are attempting to connect with an unauthorized
device and we will need the mac address to update the system.”
I indicated I had already supplied the mac address the previous day. He responded,
“Well… however you spoke with yesterday did not update the system with the right
inf ormation.”
Come on Comcast this is not rocket science! T hese modems are your basic garden variety pass through
modems and they should be able to connect to the Comcast activation sequence with little drama. AND YET …
in many cases there appears to be LOT S of drama involved in the process.
Mr. Technitudes Advice
If you are a Comcast customer and you’ve ordered a new ARRIS/Motorola SB6121 and it won’t connect to
Comcast don’t give up!
Plug it in – connect the coax – if you use a router connect that to the modem as well.
Now this part might seem counter intuitive but it worked… Do as I did, let it run ALL night – yes, all night.
Have your mac address ready and af ter calling Comcast you should be up and running.
T his is a really nice modem by the way! It’s f aster than the piece of junk that I had been leasing f rom Comcast.
3. Bottom Line – Speed Results
Comcast Original Modem – 35.35mbps download / 5.2mbps upload
ARRIS/Motorola SB6121 Cable Modem – 64.57mbps download / 12.3mbps upload
Our new modem will pay f or itself in 8.5 months and the Mr. Technitude household enjoys much f aster
connection speeds!
