Diseases treated using umbilical
cord blood stem cells since 2008
Did you know?
Stem cells are the body’s master cells
Stem cells are valuable in medical procedures because they have the ability to differentiate (change into
other types of cells in the body), which holds significant promise for improving the treatment of some of
the most common diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease, just to name a few.
Cord blood is the most readily accessible source of stem cells
Cord blood, which is found in the umbilical cord, is an easily accessible source of stem cells that is only
available when a baby is born. The stem cells in the umbilical cord blood are genetically unique to your
baby and family and may be used to treat various medical problems for your child, his or her siblings,
and other family members.
The potential medical uses of stem cells
In addition to the growing list of diseases currently being treated with stem cells, several medical
research projects are showing encouraging results for new treatments.
• Stem cells have been “triggered” to differentiate into neural cells, which could lead to treatments
for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
• Stem cells have proven their ability to turn into blood vessel cells, which could someday benefit
treatments for heart disease, allowing patients to essentially “grow their own bypass.”
• Stem cells have been labeled an important biological resource and researchers are conducting
studies to unlock the potential of stem cells in future applications for diseases like diabetes, heart
and liver disease, and muscular dystrophy, as well as for spinal cord injuries and stroke.

INFORMATION KIT
Cord tissue refers to the tissue of the umbilical cord. Until recently, cord tissue was often
discarded after birth, but new research has shown that the stem cells found in cord tissue
have the potential to treat many diseases. Cord tissue contains a specific kind of stem
cell, called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Unlike the stem cells that are collected from
cord blood MSCs collected from cord tissue are multipotent, which means they have
the capacity to differentiate into many different types of cells, including cartilage cells
(chondrocytes), bone cells (osteoblasts), and fat cells (adipocytes). This characteristic of
MSCs means that they could potentially be used to treat a wide range of diseases.
Cord Blood vs. Cord Tissue
The stem cells in cord blood and cord tissue function differently. Cord blood contains hematopoietic
stem cells (HSCs), which form the blood-related cells in the body, such as white blood cells, red blood
cells, and platelets. There are over 80 diseases that have been treated using HSCs and almost 200
clinical trials are currently under way. Cord tissue contains stem cells known as mesenchymal stem cells
(MSCs), which develop into structural and connective tissue. There are currently over 40 clinical trials
under way investigating the potential therapeutic applications of MSCs from cord tissue.
Potential Uses
Though no conditions have been treated using
mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), there are over 40
clinical trials under way. These clinical trials are exploring
the possibility of using MSCs for the following:
• Cartilage repair
• Liver disease
• Diabetes
• Stroke
• Heart disease
• Serious wounds
• Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
• Spinal cord injury
Cord blood banking, cord tissue banking, or placenta tissue banking does not guarantee that the saved cells will be applicable for every situation.
Ultimate use will be determined by a physician. Please note: Americord Registry’s activities are limited to collection of umbilical cord tissue from
autogeneic donors. Americord Registry’s possession of a New York State license for such collection does not indicate approval or endorsement of
possible future uses or future suitability of cells derived from umbilical cord tissue.

The placenta is a stem cell rich tissue that protects the developing fetus in the womb.
Stem cells from placenta tissue are “immune-privileged,” meaning they are unlikely to be
rejected by human immune systems because they would never be recognized as a foreign
body. Cord blood, which is found in the umbilical cord, contains hematopoietic stem cells
(HSCs); umbilical cord tissue contains mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Placenta tissue
contains both HSCs and MSCs; in addition, the placenta contains pluripotent stem cells,
which are able to differentiate into almost any cell within the body. Because pluripotent
stem cells can develop into almost any cell, their use is constantly being researched for
the generation of new healthy cells that can replace diseased cells.
Pluripotent Stem Cells
Placenta tissue has been shown to be a rich source of pluripotent stem cells, or cells that have the
potential to differentiate into any cell in the body. This encompasses the cells that multipotent
stem cells can differentiate into, but the differentiation potential of pluripotent stem cells is
extended to include cells of the brain, lung, and liver. Pluripotent stem cells can be harvested and
used to regenerate virtually any cell. Because of this, pluripotent stem cells from from placenta
tissue hold the promise of someday being able to treat many neurological, respiratory, and
metabolic disorders.
Hematopoietic Stem Cells
Like cord blood, the tissue of the placenta is a rich source of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs).
HSCs are cells that differentiate into blood-borne cells like red blood cells, white blood cells, and
platelets. Just like those derived from bone marrow and cord blood, HSCs from the placenta can
be used to treat over 80 diseases, including genetic disorders and cancers.
Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Placenta tissue is also an abundant source of mesenchymal stem
cells (MSCs). Unlike HSCs, MSCs are multipotent, which means
they can differentiate into a broader range of cells, including
cartilage cells, bone cells, and fat cells.
The potential therapeutic application of
MSCs to treat disease is currently the topic
of many research studies, with over 40
clinical trials under way. MSC research has
helped progress efforts to cure many still
untreatable diseases.

Why Cord Blood Stem Cells Are Better
Doctors may choose to use cord blood stem cells over bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells
because of better survival outcomes. Cord blood stem cells are easier to match and present a lower
chance of resulting in graft-versus-host-disease (“GVHD”).
More Tolerant Matching
A close match between the patient and the donor can improve a patient’s outcome after
transplant. Bone marrow is difficult to match because it requires a “perfect match” between the
donor and recipient. Cord blood stem cells, however, are less mature than those in bone marrow
and can be successfully used even when there is only a half-match. This means there is more
opportunity for transplants between family members when cord blood is banked. Some studies
have shown that overall survival rates for transplants between relatives are more than double that
of transplants from unrelated donors.
Less Graft-Versus-Host Disease
Graft-versus-host disease (“GVHD”) is a common complication after an allogeneic transplant,
which uses cells from a family member or unrelated donor. GVHD can range from mild to life
threatening. Studies have found that fewer patients get GVHD after a cord blood transplant than
do after bone marrow or peripheral blood transplants.
Collecting Cord Blood, Cord Tissue, and Placenta Tissue Is Safe
Stem cells from cord blood, cord tissue, and placenta tisse are collected after your baby is
born and the umbilical cord has been cut. The collection of stem cells is painless, easy, and safe
for mother and baby. Cord blood, cord tissue, and placenta tissue collection will not alter the normal
birthing process in any way. The average collection time is about 5 to 10 minutes and is performed by
your medical professional.
Collection After C-Sections
Stem cells can be collected from the umbilical cord after C-section deliveries. Americord uses the
only FDA-approved sterile exterior cord blood collection bag that has been approved for ALL births,
including C-sections, without adaptors.
Who Should Consider Private Cord Blood Banking?
Saving stem cells is a once in a lifetime opportunity to expand your baby’s options for medical
treatment. Everyone can benefit from cord blood banking. It is often referred to as biological insurance
that hopefully you will never need. And with the rapid pace of medical advancement, the value of
banking your baby’s cord blood increases with time.

INFORMATION KIT
It is prudent for parents to bank their baby’s cord blood if either parent has a family history of a disease
that is treatable with stem cells, such as leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma. It has also been reported
that ethnic minorities and people of mixed ethnicity have greater difficulty finding a match from stem
cell donors, which makes private banking an important opportunity. Cord blood stems cells can be used
to treat certain genetic diseases, including sickle cell anemia and thalassemia, which are more common
in certain ethnic populations.
Families preparing to adopt a newborn should consider saving stem cells since, if they are ever
needed, the cord blood may be the only available genetic source of stem cells for the adopted baby. In
addition, if the baby’s family medical history is not available, stem cells might provide valuable medical
information. Similarly, couples using fertility treatments that involve a donor egg and/or sperm should
consider banking cord blood stem cells because this may be the only opportunity to secure a genetically
related sample of stem cells for their child.
Cord Blood Banking Controversy
Cord blood banking gives parents-to-be the best opportunity to offer their babies access to the most
advanced medical treatments, should they ever need them. However, some people consider cord blood
banking controversial.
It is true that the likelihood of using stem cells is very small. Banking stem cells from cord blood is often
referred to as biological insurance. It is an investment that puts the benefits of cutting-edge scientific
advances at your disposal. And, as medical research continues to uncover new uses of stem cells, the
likelihood that the stem cells could be used increases.
Some believe that public banking is better. Americord supports the availability of public
cord blood banking. However, private cord blood banking offers advantages that
public cord blood banking does not offer. Specifically, only through private cord
blood banking are you guaranteed immediate access to your baby’s own stem
cells. This means that you do not have to spend time searching for a match, nor
do you risk not finding a match.
Private cord blood banking is an additional expense that comes at a time
when many parents-to-be are thinking about other expenses, like the
child’s education or moving to a larger home. Americord is a strong
advocate for making cord blood banking affordable for everyone.
We suspect that insurance companies will help to cover the cost of
private cord blood banking in the future. We are also committed
to continuing to offer programs where we donate cord blood
banking services to low-income families. And, as more parents
elect to bank cord blood, the costs will come down.

Top Benefits Of Private Cord Blood Banking
A Guaranteed Match
When you bank your baby’s cord blood you can rest easy knowing that if he or she ever needs a
medical treatment that uses stem cells, you have an exact match.
Quickly Available
Banking your baby’s cord blood ensures that these stem cells can be immediately available if they
are needed for treatment. A cord blood unit can be delivered from Americord’s storage facility to
a medical facility in less than two weeks. It can take two months or more to find an unrelated cord
blood, bone marrow, or peripheral blood donor through a public bank.
Selecting A Cord Blood Bank
Once you have made a decision to privately bank your baby’s cord blood, you will need to choose which
cord blood bank to use. Here are some of the key facts that you will want to consider:
•	Is the cord blood bank registered with the FDA, accredited with the AABB, and licensed by the
state’s department of health?
•	How and when is the cord blood collection kit delivered to you?
•	How quickly will the cord blood be transferred to the laboratory for processing?
•	Does the manufacturer of the cord blood collection kit have a substantial track record in the field?
•	Does the collection kit contain everything that your medical practitioner will need to collect the
cord blood and package it for pickup by the courier?
•	Does the cord blood collection kit contain clear instructions so you know what to do with it after
the cord blood has been collected?
•	Does the cord blood bank use a medical courier service?
•	Is the laboratory where the cord blood is processed appropriately accredited?
•	What is the laboratory’s reputation in the industry?
•	Is the stem cell storage facility used by the cord blood bank appropriately accredited?
•	What is the stem cell storage facility’s reputation in the industry?
•	Does the cord blood bank have a customer service hotline that is available 24/7 for any questions
related to cord blood collection and stem cell retrieval?

INFORMATION KIT
The Americord Collection Kit
Americord clients receive an Americord Collection Kit shortly after
enrollment. The Collection Kit contains all of the material your medical
practitioner will need to collect your baby’s cord blood. It also contains a pre-
labeled box that will be picked up by our medical courier. The phone number
to arrange for courier pickup is on the box. The umbilical cord blood collection
bag that is included in the Americord Collection Kit has become the industry
standard and is backed by standard operating procedures and clinical outcomes from the NIH COBLT
study. The Cord Blood Sterile Collection Bag is FDA-approved and designed to maximize the recovery
of cell-rich plasma. These sets are manufactured using validated manufacturing processes that ensure
safe, consistent, and reliable product performance. Each transplant bag is 100% inspected prior to
release. Your baby’s Collection Kit is assigned a unique identifier that always remains with your baby’s
Collection Kit, paperwork and sample. Additionally, a client ID label, which clearly identifies the client, is
attached to each sample.
When Your Baby Is Born
After your medical practitioner has made the collection using the Americord Collection Kit, the labor
and delivery staff will return the Collection Kit to you or to a designated family member. The Collection
Kit is pre-labeled and is ready to be shipped. Simply call Americord after your baby’s birth, and then
relax with your new baby. Your Collection Kit will be picked up by our medical courier directly from
your hospital room. After the medical courier picks up the Collection Kit, Americord will monitor your
shipment until it is safely delivered to our lab. While many other cord banks readily accept samples
delivered after 72 hours, this reduces the viability of the samples considerably; therefore Americord
aims to have the Collection Kit back to our laboratory within 24 hours or as quickly as possible. Unlike
other banks that use regular courier services, Americord only uses couriers that are trained to handle
time sensitive medical shipments using a consistent chain-of-custody. Americord’s medical courier
service is open and fully staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. No matter when you deliver, your
baby’s Collection Kit is shipped under highly controlled conditions to our cord blood laboratory.
After Your Baby Is Born
Your baby’s stem cells are processed the same day your collection kit is received in our AABB-accredited
laboratory, even if it happens to be a holiday. Stem cell samples are tested for cell viability, total
nucleated cell count (TNC), sterility, infectious disease markers, number of stem cells, and blood type.
All processing and testing is performed following rigorous quality assurance procedures and under the
supervision of experienced staff. Laboratory staff is made up of highly experienced health professionals
and technicians who work under the guidance and expertise of our Executive Medical Director. This
ensures that Americord delivers the cutting-edge of new cord blood advances, while guaranteeing the
safety, integrity, and viability of your baby’s stem cells. Americord tests incoming cord blood samples
before and after processing as part of our quality control to ensure that each sample is contaminant-
free on arrival and continues to be during processing in our laboratory. Our screening exceeds FDA
regulations for testing and quality control.

Stem Cells In Storage
Maintaining the viability and health of your baby’s stem cells throughout processing requires
careful lowering of the temperature prior to freezing and storage. Once the stem cells are
brought to the optimum temperature, they are placed in a storage cartridge and then into a storage
tank. Units are kept in designated freezers in a specifically designated storage area. Our AABB-
accredited laboratory’s sophisticated coding system offers easy and precise access to your cord blood
stem cells, should your family ever need them.
Americord uses Cook General BioTechnology LLC (“CGBT”) for all processing and storage of cord
blood. CGBT was founded in 1997 and is registered with the FDA as a Human Cell & Tissue Products
establishment. Its umbilical cord blood processing laboratories are licensed in New York, New Jersey,
California, Maryland and Indiana. Its facility, which is designed to meet and exceed the needs of its
customers, has been designed with features that include: multi-layer intrusion monitoring and video
surveillance; emergency power from an independent generator and a backup generator; smoke,
water, and fire detection monitoring; telephony for monitoring systems; reliable freezer temperature
monitoring; stand-by ULT and LN2 freezers; equipment calibrated with NIST traceable probes; facility
ambient temperature control; UPS battery backup systems for sensitive equipment.
When you enroll with Americord we ask you for your e-mail address, mailing address, and phone
number. Your baby’s Certificate of Storage will arrive via e-mail within one week. Should the need arise
for you to use your baby’s cord blood stem cells, Americord’s client services department and your
physician will make arrangements for confirmatory testing, release, and transportation of your baby’s
stem cells to a designated hospital.

Diseases treated using umbilical cord blood stem cells since 2008 Did you know? Stem cells are the body’s master cells Stem cells are valuable in medical procedures because they have the ability to differentiate (change into other types of cells in the body), which holds significant promise for improving the treatment of some of the most common diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease, just to name a few. Cord blood is the most readily accessible source of stem cells Cord blood, which is found in the umbilical cord, is an easily accessible source of stem cells that is only available when a baby is born. The stem cells in the umbilical cord blood are genetically unique to your baby and family and may be used to treat various medical problems for your child, his or her siblings, and other family members. The potential medical uses of stem cells In addition to the growing list of diseases currently being treated with stem cells, several medical research projects are showing encouraging results for new treatments. • Stem cells have been “triggered” to differentiate into neural cells, which could lead to treatments for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. • Stem cells have proven their ability to turn into blood vessel cells, which could someday benefit treatments for heart disease, allowing patients to essentially “grow their own bypass.” • Stem cells have been labeled an important biological resource and researchers are conducting studies to unlock the potential of stem cells in future applications for diseases like diabetes, heart and liver disease, and muscular dystrophy, as well as for spinal cord injuries and stroke.

  • 4. cordadvantage.com © Copyright 2013 Americord Registry V09172013 INFORMATION KIT Cord tissue refers to the tissue of the umbilical cord. Until recently, cord tissue was often discarded after birth, but new research has shown that the stem cells found in cord tissue have the potential to treat many diseases. Cord tissue contains a specific kind of stem cell, called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Unlike the stem cells that are collected from cord blood MSCs collected from cord tissue are multipotent, which means they have the capacity to differentiate into many different types of cells, including cartilage cells (chondrocytes), bone cells (osteoblasts), and fat cells (adipocytes). This characteristic of MSCs means that they could potentially be used to treat a wide range of diseases. Cord Blood vs. Cord Tissue The stem cells in cord blood and cord tissue function differently. Cord blood contains hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which form the blood-related cells in the body, such as white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. There are over 80 diseases that have been treated using HSCs and almost 200 clinical trials are currently under way. Cord tissue contains stem cells known as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which develop into structural and connective tissue. There are currently over 40 clinical trials under way investigating the potential therapeutic applications of MSCs from cord tissue. Potential Uses Though no conditions have been treated using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), there are over 40 clinical trials under way. These clinical trials are exploring the possibility of using MSCs for the following: • Cartilage repair • Liver disease • Diabetes • Stroke • Heart disease • Serious wounds • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) • Spinal cord injury Cord blood banking, cord tissue banking, or placenta tissue banking does not guarantee that the saved cells will be applicable for every situation. Ultimate use will be determined by a physician. Please note: Americord Registry’s activities are limited to collection of umbilical cord tissue from autogeneic donors. Americord Registry’s possession of a New York State license for such collection does not indicate approval or endorsement of possible future uses or future suitability of cells derived from umbilical cord tissue. • 5. cordadvantage.com © Copyright 2013 Americord Registry V09172013 INFORMATION KIT The placenta is a stem cell rich tissue that protects the developing fetus in the womb. Stem cells from placenta tissue are “immune-privileged,” meaning they are unlikely to be rejected by human immune systems because they would never be recognized as a foreign body. Cord blood, which is found in the umbilical cord, contains hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs); umbilical cord tissue contains mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Placenta tissue contains both HSCs and MSCs; in addition, the placenta contains pluripotent stem cells, which are able to differentiate into almost any cell within the body. Because pluripotent stem cells can develop into almost any cell, their use is constantly being researched for the generation of new healthy cells that can replace diseased cells. Pluripotent Stem Cells Placenta tissue has been shown to be a rich source of pluripotent stem cells, or cells that have the potential to differentiate into any cell in the body. This encompasses the cells that multipotent stem cells can differentiate into, but the differentiation potential of pluripotent stem cells is extended to include cells of the brain, lung, and liver. Pluripotent stem cells can be harvested and used to regenerate virtually any cell. Because of this, pluripotent stem cells from from placenta tissue hold the promise of someday being able to treat many neurological, respiratory, and metabolic disorders. Hematopoietic Stem Cells Like cord blood, the tissue of the placenta is a rich source of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). HSCs are cells that differentiate into blood-borne cells like red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Just like those derived from bone marrow and cord blood, HSCs from the placenta can be used to treat over 80 diseases, including genetic disorders and cancers. Mesenchymal Stem Cells Placenta tissue is also an abundant source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Unlike HSCs, MSCs are multipotent, which means they can differentiate into a broader range of cells, including cartilage cells, bone cells, and fat cells. The potential therapeutic application of MSCs to treat disease is currently the topic of many research studies, with over 40 clinical trials under way. MSC research has helped progress efforts to cure many still untreatable diseases. What is the Placenta?
  • 6. cordadvantage.com © Copyright 2013 Americord Registry V09172013 INFORMATION KIT Why Cord Blood Stem Cells Are Better Doctors may choose to use cord blood stem cells over bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells because of better survival outcomes. Cord blood stem cells are easier to match and present a lower chance of resulting in graft-versus-host-disease (“GVHD”). More Tolerant Matching A close match between the patient and the donor can improve a patient’s outcome after transplant. Bone marrow is difficult to match because it requires a “perfect match” between the donor and recipient. Cord blood stem cells, however, are less mature than those in bone marrow and can be successfully used even when there is only a half-match. This means there is more opportunity for transplants between family members when cord blood is banked. Some studies have shown that overall survival rates for transplants between relatives are more than double that of transplants from unrelated donors. Less Graft-Versus-Host Disease Graft-versus-host disease (“GVHD”) is a common complication after an allogeneic transplant, which uses cells from a family member or unrelated donor. GVHD can range from mild to life threatening. Studies have found that fewer patients get GVHD after a cord blood transplant than do after bone marrow or peripheral blood transplants. Collecting Cord Blood, Cord Tissue, and Placenta Tissue Is Safe Stem cells from cord blood, cord tissue, and placenta tisse are collected after your baby is born and the umbilical cord has been cut. The collection of stem cells is painless, easy, and safe for mother and baby. Cord blood, cord tissue, and placenta tissue collection will not alter the normal birthing process in any way. The average collection time is about 5 to 10 minutes and is performed by your medical professional. Collection After C-Sections Stem cells can be collected from the umbilical cord after C-section deliveries. Americord uses the only FDA-approved sterile exterior cord blood collection bag that has been approved for ALL births, including C-sections, without adaptors. Who Should Consider Private Cord Blood Banking? Saving stem cells is a once in a lifetime opportunity to expand your baby’s options for medical treatment. Everyone can benefit from cord blood banking. It is often referred to as biological insurance that hopefully you will never need. And with the rapid pace of medical advancement, the value of banking your baby’s cord blood increases with time. !
  • 7. cordadvantage.com © Copyright 2013 Americord Registry V09172013 INFORMATION KIT It is prudent for parents to bank their baby’s cord blood if either parent has a family history of a disease that is treatable with stem cells, such as leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma. It has also been reported that ethnic minorities and people of mixed ethnicity have greater difficulty finding a match from stem cell donors, which makes private banking an important opportunity. Cord blood stems cells can be used to treat certain genetic diseases, including sickle cell anemia and thalassemia, which are more common in certain ethnic populations. Families preparing to adopt a newborn should consider saving stem cells since, if they are ever needed, the cord blood may be the only available genetic source of stem cells for the adopted baby. In addition, if the baby’s family medical history is not available, stem cells might provide valuable medical information. Similarly, couples using fertility treatments that involve a donor egg and/or sperm should consider banking cord blood stem cells because this may be the only opportunity to secure a genetically related sample of stem cells for their child. Cord Blood Banking Controversy Cord blood banking gives parents-to-be the best opportunity to offer their babies access to the most advanced medical treatments, should they ever need them. However, some people consider cord blood banking controversial. It is true that the likelihood of using stem cells is very small. Banking stem cells from cord blood is often referred to as biological insurance. It is an investment that puts the benefits of cutting-edge scientific advances at your disposal. And, as medical research continues to uncover new uses of stem cells, the likelihood that the stem cells could be used increases. Some believe that public banking is better. Americord supports the availability of public cord blood banking. However, private cord blood banking offers advantages that public cord blood banking does not offer. Specifically, only through private cord blood banking are you guaranteed immediate access to your baby’s own stem cells. This means that you do not have to spend time searching for a match, nor do you risk not finding a match. Private cord blood banking is an additional expense that comes at a time when many parents-to-be are thinking about other expenses, like the child’s education or moving to a larger home. Americord is a strong advocate for making cord blood banking affordable for everyone. We suspect that insurance companies will help to cover the cost of private cord blood banking in the future. We are also committed to continuing to offer programs where we donate cord blood banking services to low-income families. And, as more parents elect to bank cord blood, the costs will come down.
  • 8. cordadvantage.com © Copyright 2013 Americord Registry V09172013 INFORMATION KIT Top Benefits Of Private Cord Blood Banking A Guaranteed Match When you bank your baby’s cord blood you can rest easy knowing that if he or she ever needs a medical treatment that uses stem cells, you have an exact match. Quickly Available Banking your baby’s cord blood ensures that these stem cells can be immediately available if they are needed for treatment. A cord blood unit can be delivered from Americord’s storage facility to a medical facility in less than two weeks. It can take two months or more to find an unrelated cord blood, bone marrow, or peripheral blood donor through a public bank. Selecting A Cord Blood Bank Once you have made a decision to privately bank your baby’s cord blood, you will need to choose which cord blood bank to use. Here are some of the key facts that you will want to consider: • Is the cord blood bank registered with the FDA, accredited with the AABB, and licensed by the state’s department of health? • How and when is the cord blood collection kit delivered to you? • How quickly will the cord blood be transferred to the laboratory for processing? • Does the manufacturer of the cord blood collection kit have a substantial track record in the field? • Does the collection kit contain everything that your medical practitioner will need to collect the cord blood and package it for pickup by the courier? • Does the cord blood collection kit contain clear instructions so you know what to do with it after the cord blood has been collected? • Does the cord blood bank use a medical courier service? • Is the laboratory where the cord blood is processed appropriately accredited? • What is the laboratory’s reputation in the industry? • Is the stem cell storage facility used by the cord blood bank appropriately accredited? • What is the stem cell storage facility’s reputation in the industry? • Does the cord blood bank have a customer service hotline that is available 24/7 for any questions related to cord blood collection and stem cell retrieval?

All processing and testing is performed following rigorous quality assurance procedures and under the supervision of experienced staff. Laboratory staff is made up of highly experienced health professionals and technicians who work under the guidance and expertise of our Executive Medical Director. This ensures that Americord delivers the cutting-edge of new cord blood advances, while guaranteeing the safety, integrity, and viability of your baby’s stem cells. Americord tests incoming cord blood samples before and after processing as part of our quality control to ensure that each sample is contaminant- free on arrival and continues to be during processing in our laboratory. Our screening exceeds FDA regulations for testing and quality control.
