2. WHAT IS IT?
It is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that
could affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract
from the mouth to the butt.
Primarily causes abdominal pain, vomiting,
diarrhea or weight loss but can also cause
complications outside of the body.
It is caused by interactions between
environmental, immunological and bacterial
factors in genetically susceptible individuals.
Resulting in a chronic inflammatory disorder.
4. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Many people have symptoms for years before
diagnosis.
Experience chronic recurring periods of flare-ups
and remission.
Abdominal pain may be the initial symptom of
crohn’s often accompanied by diarrhea.
May or may not be bloody and in severe cases an
individual may have up to 20 bowel movements a
day
It can also affect many other organ systems
5. CAUSE
Caused by a combination of environmental
factors and genetic predisposition.
The first genetically complex disease in which the
relationship between genetic risk factors and the
immune system is understood in considerable detail.
Crohn's has a genetic component. Because of this,
siblings of known people with Crohn's are 30 times
more likely to develop Crohn's than the general
population.
Current thinking is that microorganisms are taking
advantage of their host's weakened mucosal layer and
inability to clear bacteria from the intestinal walls.
