The Negro spiritual, a uniquely American art form, is credited by some cultural commentators for the survival of African American people through slavery, Jim Crow, racism and the civil rights struggle. It speaks poignantly of a people’s belief in God’s ability to protect them and propel them into a better future. Often, against all odds, the musical idiom known as the African American spiritual, gave those who struggled against injustice the faith and strength to keep moving forward.
1. Presented by
Leela P. Hone ysucker-Miller
“An Evening of Negro Spirituals”
Saturday, November 12, 2011,
at the Georgia International Convention Center
Atlanta, Georgia
2. Time is important to me because
I want to sing long enough to
leave a message. I’m used to sing-
ing in churches where nobody
would dare stop me until the
Lord arrives!

3. Mission Statement
Importance of the Project:
Since the end of slavery and the formation
of Gospel music, the Negro Spiritual have
been placed on the back burner, when it
comes to religious music, especially in the
Black Churches. That rich history in song
has been replaced by radical, hip-hop rap-
ping, and singing in the Black Community.
The importance of this project will be to
enhance the awareness of our youth, of
the oppression and the struggles in which
former enslaved individuals endured, and
the methods by which they were able to
sooth their souls.
4. The Negro Spiritual Project—Recovering
