Lesson Plan: TRX and Angles


Introduction
    • Lesson Topic: TRX and Angles
    • Length of Lesson: 90 minutes (1 block)
    • VA Standards of Learning: Mathematics 6.13: The student will
              a. estimate angle measures, using 45°, 90°, and 180° as referents, and use the appropriate tools
                  to measure the given angles; and
              b. measure and draw right, acute, and obtuse angles and triangles.

Cognitive Objectives
Students will:
    • Estimate visually the angle measure of a given angle by using 45°, 90°, and 180° as referents, and use
         appropriate tools to check the reasonableness of the estimate.
    • Draw and measure acute, right, and obtuse angles, using appropriate tools.
    • Draw and measure acute, right, and obtuse triangles, using appropriate tools.

Materials/Technology and Advanced Preparation
   • TRX pictures with recorded audio explaining 45°, 90°, and 120° and 180° angles.
   • Class website to post audio file.
   • Laptops and headphones for all students.
   • Image projector to show pictures with recorded audio.
   • Greater Than/Less Than & Acute/Obtuse ping-pong paddles for kinesthetic involvement.
   • ‘Angle Hunt: In Class’ worksheet for all students.
   • ‘Angle Hunt: At Home’ worksheet for all students.

Teaching and Learning Sequence
Introduction/Anticipatory Set

    •     Students draw an acute angle, a right angle, and an obtuse angle.

              o    Briefly review as a class what makes an angle acute (<90°), right (=90°), and obtuse (>90°).

    •     Show TRX pictures with recorded audio explaining 45°, 90°, and 120° and 180° angles.

Lesson Development

    •     Hand out Greater Than/Less Than & Acute/Obtuse ping-pong paddles for kinesthetic involvement.

    •     Show TRX pictures with recorded audio again. This time, students hold up their paddle representing their

          answer to questions in the recorded audio.

    •     In pairs, students go around the room drawing and measuring right, acute, and obtuse angles and triangles.

          Items/pictures have been strategically placed around the room to facilitate this activity.

              o    Students fill out ‘Angle Hunt: In Class’ worksheet in pairs.

Closure

    •     Each pair of students reports one of their angle findings from the class activity. Explain what you put on the

          ‘Angle Hunt: In Class’ worksheet.

Assessment
Formative
    • Pictures with recorded audio file encourages students to participate in the lesson in a call-and-response
        format.
    • Students must find and draw different measures of angles, demonstrating new knowledge.

Summative
   • ‘Angle Hunt: In Class’ worksheet demonstrates students’ understanding of the material and serves as an aid
       for the homework activity.
   • ‘Angle Hunt: At Home’ worksheet demonstrates students’ understanding of the material as it relates to
       triangles as well as angles.
