To Have and Not to Have Privilege In the paragraphs that below I will touch lightly on my
struggles in understanding what it means "to "have" and "not to have" privilege. Lastly, I will
address positive impacts of deflecting white privilege. The author states that "privilege is not

Privilege comes to mind when I think about my future. I have been blessed with a multitude of
"privileges" that my parent's have not been able to experience. I've had a stable lifestyle, a home, a
high school education, and I even got my driver's license at age sixteen, like any other American

As the eternal clock of high school winds down, the rain began kissing my skin; the feeling
reminded me of the tears that ran down my cheeks that day. While walking, I made up a theory that
crying is a way humans comfort themselves in the absence of people worth connecting to.

My teacher's words attacked me and my only mechanism was my emotions.
She talked about my body with such disgust, that it would seem as though she wanted me to
apologize for having one. I'm never the person to feel insecure, but I wasn't sure whether she was
disgusted by my body image or my choice of appearance. I wasn't sure what hurt me more.
Walking to my next class, my eyes poured rain and I could feel the silent judgement of the people

As a white, straight male, I've come to recognise that I've inherited a certain amount of privilege
through no fault of my own. Racism, homophobia and sexism are still massive systemic problems
in the West today. While it might not be so obvious, and many people would claim that they play
no part in this, we live in a system that is incredibly biased towards middle–class, white, straight,

Tatum's description of the formation of racial identity among children and young adults helps me
understand why races self–segregate. She categorizes the steps of the psychological process by
which individuals recognize their "place" in society as part of a racial group and seek identity within
that racial group, often to the point of conforming to negative stereotypes. This reaffirms racial
minorities' sense of identity and community and the value of their culture even though it differs from
"mainstream" (white, middle–class) American culture, or what Delpit would call the culture of
power. On the other hand, self–segregation reinforces the notion that races are different and that race
