DISCURSIVE THEORY – EAN UNIVERSITY
TYPES OF PARAGRAPH
Group of related sentences.
Text structural unit.
Part of a longer composition.
Those are a response of each type of text,
such as narrative , descriptive,
argumentative and expository.
paragraph
By location
OPENING: introduce the text. Is where the
problem or thesis is presented.
TRANSITION: serves to change the subject, to
give below the text or move from one place to
another.
CLOSING: summarizes the overall meaning of the
text. It provides conclusions , suggestions or
motivations by the writer.
By contents
ARGUMENTATIVE: Try to persuade or convince
through reason or facts what is said or what is
denied.
CHRONOLOGICAL: Expresses the order that
certain facts occurred.
ENUMERATION: It has an organizer that helps the
reader phrase indicating the organization of text.
DESCRIPTIVE: Describe the object , person, idea
or situation that is going to speak.
EXPLANATORY: This clarifies and develops the
most widely discussed topic.
EXPOSITORY: reports on the subject and the
information is presented in an organized way.
NARRATIVE: It exposes events or actions
following a temporary order.
By logical structure
COMPARATIVE: It presents similarities or
differences between two or more objects.
DEDUCTIVE: the main point is placed at the
beginning. It is part of a generalization and then
presents specific cases.
CAUSE- EFFECT: It presents an event followed by
the reasons that caused it or any consequences.
APPROACH AND PROBLEM RESOLUTION:
In the first part the problem is presented, in the
second part the solution is exposed.
PROCESS OR SEQUENCE: A series of
events or a process is described in a particular
order.
INDUCTIVE: It has the principal idea at the
end. It starts with sentences expressing
secondary ideas to reach to a generalization.
