Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that is obtained through foods like fruits, vegetables, and breastmilk. It serves many important functions in the body related to collagen synthesis, iron absorption, immune function, and acting as an antioxidant. Scurvy results from vitamin C deficiency and can cause bleeding gums, bone pain, impaired wound healing and anemia. It is usually seen in infants and children who are exclusively fed boiled milk or formula without vitamin C supplementation. Treatment involves a high dose of vitamin C supplementation as well as including vitamin C rich foods in the diet.
