What is a Geopark ?
• A territory;
• which includes a particular geological heritage;
• a sustainable territorial development strategy supported by a
European program to promote development;
• it has clearly defined boundaries;
• and a sufficient surface area for true territorial economic
development;
• has an active role in the economic development of its territory
through enhancement of a general image linked to the geological
heritage and the development of Geotourism;

• Founded in 2000 from four different areas within Europe which
realized the potential benefits from the new kinds of alternative
tourism and especially the geotourism
• The objectives:
– The promotion of each geopark member and the geotourism
– The establishment of common standards and quality guidelines in order
to ensure a uniform quality and sustainable tourism product
• Very well organized structure:
– meetings
– Member evaluation
– Daily communication and exchange of knowledge among members
– Partnership for European fundings

of Crete and the AKOMM Developmental Agency
• It is characterized from a very rich geoheritage accompanied with
exceptional natural and cultural heritage
• Numerous actions have taken place that aim to:
– Conserve the heritage monuments
– Create infrastructure and attract tourism
– Enhance the local economy
