Smart Use of Visual Media
4. Today’s Plan:
• Why photos and Video are Important
• How to capture quality photos and footage
• Storage and distribution
• Use it!
10. Think before you Act!
Pre-Production:
• Select characters (pre-interviews)
• Scout locations
• Release forms
• Shoot list
• Write strong interview questions
• Determine crew and gear
11. What Elements go into good photos and videos?
• Equipment
• Technical knowledge
• Ability to visually tell a story
• Organization
REMEMBER: The most important thing is the
story you tell, not the tools you use to tell it.
12. Basic Gear
Camera Sound • Tripod
(some times a good microphone • Lights
• Consumer vs. Pro can mean more than a camera!) • Storage
• Understanding camera
• LAV
settings (frame rate,
• Shot gun
resolution, bitrate)
• Onboard
• Headphones
13. Setting up for
An Interview or shoot
• Find your location (stable, quiet, controlled environment, what
do you want the background to say, preferably
large with color)
• Choose your frame
• Lighting
• Set your white balance, focus, iris
• Check audio levels: record/playback test
• Prep subject, sign release form
• Turn of cell phones and press record!
19. Lighting
Don’t put your subject in front of a window; instead use
window to light the subject!
Window behind subject Window behind camera
20. White Balance
Set the camera for
where white
is white in the
light in which you’re
filming or
photographing.
Sunlight = blue
Indoors = oranges
Fluorescent = green
23. Focus & Iris
Manual - Zoom into your subjects face to tell the camera
where you want to focus
Iris – Helps you adjust your exposure.
24. Audio
Avoid using the onboard mic
• If you have two channels, set up a shot gun microphone and place
a LAV on the subject
• If you have only one channel, use either an LAV or shot gun
Check your levels
Make sure you are in a quiet environment.
25. Gather Supporting Footage
and Creating a “Scene”
7 Shots you should try to get while filming a scene:
1. Establishing wide shot
2. Action medium shot
3. Over the shoulder shots
4. Cut Aways – coverage that relates to your subject
5. Linking shots
6. Close-ups
7. Listening shots
33. Pointers for
Shooting Usable Footage
• Hold a steady shot for 10 seconds
• If filming hand held, make sure to support yourself and
use your core!
• If you have a tripod, use the pan and tilt features
to give the shot some action
• Avoid using the zoom. Zooming in on handheld shots
makes shaky footage. If you want to get close to your
subject physically get closer with the camera.
• Sound!
35. PRODUCTION IS ONLY HALF THE WORK
• Before you are ready to take a nap after your long day
of work, remember to store your gear in a safe place!
• Put your batteries on the charger
• Download your photos of the SD card and
organize them
• Set time aside to review your photos or footage before
the next shoot so you can see what you want
to improve upon!
36. EXTERNAL STORAGE
• Why use external storage?
• USB, FireWire, eSATA and
Thunderbolt. Oh my!
• How much storage will you
need?
38. Start With a File Structure
Think about your needs
Folders are your friend
oEditorial
oImages
oAudio
oGraphics and Branding
oDocuments
Think a uniformed structure for
versions of edits and selects
39. A SYSTEM ONLY WORKS IF YOU
USE IT!!
• Copy your files to the
correct folder
BEFORE you import
them.
• Take the time to
name your files
correctly.
44. Need A Video
Camera?
Between now and
NAJDS we’ll be asking
video related
questions in the
Facebook Group.
Answer for your
chance to win one of

Tape literally means shooting on tape weather it is sd, hi-8 or minidv, hdv, dvcamTapesless is when you shoot to memory or an SD card. Accoring to the survey most of you will be shooing on this format (this is what a flip camera is except limited memory)Your camera will either have a fix amount of memory or an expandable amount through an SD card.
We’ll go thru each of this in detail
How do they get everything in the backgound to look out of focus? One is everything behind hi is darker and his face is the brighter object. Secondly the moved him away from the wall/

Fo to lowel.edu to see better examples of this
Manually focus zoom in their face as much as you can then through the focal length of your lens will stay in focus. Auto focus is fine but the way this works is the lens choose focus and wilwil readjust it’s self.
Hopefully you have a camera that hooks to an external microphone and can xyz..
When you call to have consultation with Danny and I one thing we will ask you is how do you plan to show your story? Have you made a shot list? Are you are going to say something to us like – oh we want to show our kids learning the Hebrew alphabet, or learning to sing, or read. And say we’ll get a shot of them doing this. But what we are going to say is how – how many shots. One shot doesn't make a full scene. How can you bring your audience into the story to feel like there there, and how can you add a variety. Go into list and examples
Gather screne grabs and still images of b-rollAnother example is think about wedding photographers, always getting little other things that help tell the story of the day

If a teacher is reading a line from a book, or if a student is asking a question film the whole question so you can use that audio later.
Along with what pieces of the story you might get still.
