SpringOne Platform 2017 David Turanski, Pivotal; Rohit Sood, Liberty Mutual; Rohit Kelapure, Pivotal; Justin Stone, Liberty Mutual This session will detail a synthesis of techniques used to destroy a monolithic BPM and orchestration based application at Liberty Mutual into an event driven microservices based architecture implemented with Event Sourcing and CQRS. The transformation and developer productivity affected by the monolith decomposition and alignment of business capabilities to bounded contexts teaches lessons for all enterprises looking to undergo similar changes.

For enterprises, it's rarely a single function causing your OSS problem, it's a combination of architecture, packages, or networks. Using three real-world examples, these slides, from our recent webinar, walk through identifying the infrastructure needs, the technology stack selection process, and the final architected solution for each environment (e-commerce, PaaS, and HPC machine learning.)

MySQL provides hundreds of status counters, but how do you make sense of all that monitoring data? If you’re in Operations and your job is to monitor the health of MySQL/MariaDB Galera Cluster or Percona XtraDB Cluster, then this webinar is for you. Setting up a Galera Cluster is fairly straightforward, but keeping it in a good shape and knowing what to look for when it’s having production issues can be a challenge. Status counters can be tricky to read … Which of them are more important than others? How do you find your way in a labyrinth of different variables? Which of them can make a significant difference? How might a host’s health impact MySQL performance? How to identify problematic nodes in your cluster? To find out more, read these webinar slides (or watch the replay). Our colleague Krzysztof Książek provided a deep-dive session on what to monitor in Galera Cluster for MySQL & MariaDB. Krzysztof is a MySQL DBA with experience in managing complex database environments for companies like Zendesk, Chegg, Pinterest and Flipboard. Amongst other things, Krzysztof discussed why having a good monitoring system is a must, covering the following topics: Galera monitoring • cluster status • flow control Host metrics and their impact on MySQL • CPU • memory • I/O InnoDB metrics • CPU-related • I/O-related

For many years, the gold standard of business strategy has been the mantra “Sustainable competitive advantage.” But the world has changed. Moving forward, the mantra for survival must be “Continuous innovation.” In this talk, I will take the audience inside the architectural foundation of a modern cloud native platform. I’ll walk through the tools they’ll use to deliver on the promise of continuous innovation — tools such as Docker, Lattice, Puppet, and Cloud Foundry. And I’ll show examples of how to use those tools to deliver the speed and portability businesses need to thrive in a cloud native world.

Early Draft: Service Mesh allows developers to focus on business logic while the crosscutting network data layer code is handled by the Service Mesh. This is a boon because this code can be tricky to implement and hard to test all of the edge cases. Service Mesh takes this a few steps further than AOP or Servlet Filters or custom language-specific frameworks because it works regardless of the underlying programming language being used which is great for polyglot development shops. Thus standardizing how these layers work, while allowing teams to pick the best tools or languages for the job at hand. Kubernetes and Istio Service Mesh automate best practices for DevSecOps needs like: failover, scale-out, scalability, health checks, circuit breakers, rate limiters, metrics, observability, avoiding cascading failure, disaster recovery, and traffic routing; supporting CI/CD and microservices architecture. Istio’s ability to automate and maintaining zero trust networks is its most important feature. In the age of high-profile data breaches, security is paramount. Companies want to avoid major brand issues that impact the bottom line and shrink market capitalization in an instant. Istio allows a standard way to do mTLS and auto certificate rotation which helps prevent a breach and limits the blast radius if a breach occurs. Istio also takes the concern of mTLS from microservices deployments and makes it easy to use taking the burden off of application developers.

To stay competitive in today's global economy, organizations need to harness data from multiple sources, extract information and then make real-time decisions. Depending on the industry and the organization, Big Data encompasses information from multiple internal and external sources. Capturing, integrating and preparing this data for downstream analysis is often time-consuming and presents a big challenge. Today, organizations are struggling to cobble together different open source software to build an effective data pipeline that can withstand the volume as well as the speed of data ingestion and analysis. Robin relieves customers from the pains of building and maintaining a data pipeline and helps enterprises to make the most of Big Data. In this presentation, we will focus on how Robin’s containerization platform can be used to: - Build an agile and elastic data pipeline - Deploy, scale, and manage the most complex big data applications with just a single click of a button - Deal with variety, velocity, and volume of enterprise Big Data

My team at Zalando fell in love with KStreams and their programming model straight out of the gate. However, as a small team of developers, building out and supporting our infrastructure while still trying to deliver solutions for our business has not always resulted in a smooth journey. Can a small team of a couple of developers run their own Kafka infrastructure confidently and still spend most of their time developing code? In this talk, we will dive into some of the problems we experienced while running Kafka brokers and Kafka streams applications, as well as the consultations we had with other teams around this matter. We will outline some of the pragmatic decisions we made regarding backups, monitoring and operations to minimize our time spent administering our Kafka brokers and various stream applications.

DevNexus 2015 Docker: containerizing a monolithic app into a microservice-based PaaS Convert a monolithic application into a microservice-based PaaS using Docker and related, containerization technologies. This will be the third presentation of a series of presentations that began greater than one year ago to evangelize the benefits of Docker. The scope of content spans from a development environment to a hybrid PaaS, and how Containerization is an enabler of architectural choice, innovation, scalability, and polyglot solutions. The basics of Docker will be examined including repositories, brief discussion about managing and monitoring Docker containers, service discovery, and security. New and emerging technologies will be a constant theme, particularly about microservices, in addition to the ongoing evolution of the market and what the future may bring. Common organizational issues (and tactical solutions) that may impede successful decomposition and migration of legacy monoliths will be discussed, including security, DevOps and refactoring. Hypothetical architectures will be described for building progressively more robust and complex applications and deployment models. The goal is to highlight the power, flexibility and scalability that containers enable. Examples will start simple, from a local development environment, that is a simple two container setup that encapsulate a database and application tier. Subsequent discussion will involve progressively more complex and robust deployments that include features such as service discovery, automatic load balancing, and abstractions to simplify linking of containers including service gateways. With the stopping point of a hybrid PaaS.
