I think this actually harkens back to a very old design and information theory battle among:pure information representationstructured representationpresentation "hinted" representationpresentation
The idea of structured information with flexibility in presentation goes back to at least the very early days of GUIs, and before that it was structured-information for flexible search.And remember, that even early web was 'device agnostic' in that designers had to target a variety of screen sizes and color pallets
