This paper considers how hermeneutics and other related theories may bring new insights into KO. They provide a most realistic representation of the complexity of knowledge and meaning according to which new forms of KOSs could be designed. Computational and conceptual aspects of these issues are discussed taking into account a number of case studies.

Talk held during the SolarStorm Learning Analytics Symposium. Organized by Simon Buckingham Shum. The OUNL team will talk about work in progress from a SocialLearn research internship held by Bieke Schreurs. The Network Awareness Tool (NAT) was developed initially for rendering the normally invisible non-digital networks underpinning informal learning (in particular for teacher professional development). The work reported here describes how NAT was adapted to render social networks between informal learners in the OU’s SocialLearn platform, in which different social ties can be filtered in and out of the network visualization, and moreover, enriched with topics. http://bit.ly/LearningAnalyticsOU

This presentation discusses scholarly definitions for the research construct “digital literacy,” identifies limitations in conceptualizations to-date, fand presents a proposed framework of Six Contemporary Learning Abilities (or 6-CLAs: Create, Manage, Publish, Socialize, Research, Surf). This explicated framework offers a more structured definition based on student-centered social constructivist learning theory. The article then presents an empirical investigation of digital literacy development, drawing on the framework, and its proposed approach for operationalizing technology activities (whether as research constructs or instructional activities). The empirical analysis is situated in the context of an innovative educational program implementation of game design based learning for middle and high school students offered in a U.S. state, in the 2011/2012 school year. The study explores how student engagement in activities representing the 6-CLA dimensions factor, inter-correlate, change from pre- to post-program, and bring about student transfer of that engagement, from school to home environments. Findings reveal that the dimensions proposed hang together well, students change in their engagement as a result of the intervention across multiple dimensions in both school and home contexts, and at-school engagement in the dimensions contributes to at-home engagement in them (in various ways as reported). The study offers support for the proposed framework, provides some evidence of digital divide effects for the intervention, presents questions for further inquiry, and offers a conceptual and research design stake in the ground for other researchers interested in the digital literacy construct.

This paper presents how platforms initially designed to enable the construction of personal learning environments can help teachers and learners to aggregate their own MOOCs from resources freely available in the Cloud under Creative Commons licenses. Compare to the mainstream MOOC platforms like Coursera or EdX which are basically learning management systems open to external students, the proposed solution offers built-in social media features to boost opportunistic interaction and informal exchanges between students.

The first part of the report presents recent migratory patterns by origin and destination. These estimates allow for an assessment of the scope of international migration from developing countries, providing a critical underpinning to the debate on international migration and development. Recent levels of remittance transfers are also presented, including evidence on the costs of transferring remittances. Further, the report highlights recent activities to safeguard the rights of migrants and to combat irregular migration. Gaps in protecting and assisting migrants, including “stranded migrants” and people who move in the context of environmental change, are discussed. The second part of the report synthesizes recent efforts of the United Nations system to enhance partnerships, coordination and cooperation through coordination meetings and the Global Migration Group (GMG). It also reviews the support provided by the GMG to Member States, including the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD). The third part of the report contains proposals for the organisation of the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development, to be convened by the General Assembly during its sixty-eighth session in 2013, pursuant to resolution 63/225. The report suggests a structure and format for the event as well as possible themes, preparatory activities and outcomes. The report concludes with a set of concrete recommendations to enhance the benefits of migration and to reduce its negative impacts for development and recounts the steps that are being taken in preparing for the 2013 High-level Dialogue.

Join me in this session where I'll share our journey of building a fully serverless application that flawlessly managed check-ins for an event with a staggering 80 thousand registrations. We'll dive into three key strategies that made this possible. Firstly, by harnessing DynamoDB global tables, we ensured global service availability and data replication across regions, boosting performance and disaster recovery. Next, we'll explore how we seamlessly integrated real-time updates into the app using Appsync subscriptions, making the experience dynamic and engaging for users. Finally, I'll discuss how provisioned concurrency not only improved performance but also kept costs in check, highlighting the cost-effectiveness of serverless architectures. Through these strategies and the inherent scalability of serverless technology, our application effortlessly handled massive user loads without manual intervention. This session is a real world example to the power and efficiency of modern cloud-based solutions in enabling seamless scalability and robust performance with Serverless

ScyllaDB has the potential to deliver impressive performance and scalability. The better you understand how it works, the more you can squeeze out of it. But before you squeeze, make sure you know what to monitor! Watch our experienced Postgres developer work through monitoring and performance strategies that help him understand what mistakes he’s made moving to NoSQL. And learn with him as our database performance expert offers friendly guidance on how to use monitoring and performance tuning to get his sample Rust application on the right track. This webinar focuses on using monitoring and performance tuning to discover and correct mistakes that commonly occur when developers move from SQL to NoSQL. For example: - Common issues getting up and running with the monitoring stack - Using the CQL optimizations dashboard - Common issues causing high latency in a node - Common issues causing replica imbalance - What a healthy system looks like in terms of memory - Key metrics to keep an eye on This isn’t “Death-by-Powerpoint.” We’ll walk through problems encountered while migrating a real application from Postgres to ScyllaDB – and try to fix them live as well.

The standard Salesforce Approval process can be limiting in many ways, especially in complex scenarios. What if there was a way to implement very flexible approvals where one can use Apex code to make data updates in unrelated records, dynamically generate next steps details, and compute assignees on the fly? And still use UI-based configurations to implement concrete approval processes. In this session, we will share ideas behind such a solution and show a few lines of code to get you started.

Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.
