GENRE STUDIES
 Set a publication date first—begin with the end in mind
 What mentor texts will you use to introduce this unit of
study?
 What types of mini-lessons might be included within the
reading and writing workshops?
 Reflect on student noticings in an effort to answer:
 What kinds of topics are appropriate for the genre?
 How do writers of this genre develop their topics?
 How is this genre crafted in ways that make it compelling for
readers?

TYPES OF MINILESSONS
 Procedural Lessons: important information about how the
workshop runs (how to get or use materials, where to
confer with a friends, etc).
 Writing Process Lessons: strategies writers use to help
them choose, explore, or organize a topic
 Qualities of Good Writing Lessons: information to
deepen a student’s understanding of literary techniques:
use of scenes, influence of point of view, strong language,
leads and endings, etc.
 Revision and Editing Skills: strategies for looking at
writing in new ways; information to develop understanding
of spelling, punctuation and grammatical skills
