2. Best Practice
• The teacher explicitly teaches vocabulary specific to their subject or topic.
• The teacher will clearly display and verbalise in each class the lesson focus.
• The Hook– Grab student attention. E.g. use visuals, props or something related to students’
interests.
• Prior Knowledge (Getting Knowledge Ready – Munro) When beginning a unit, or a lesson
(where applicable) tie into what the students already know. Use questioning techniques to
draw out class, group or individual knowledge.
• Review -At the end of the lesson the teacher should refer back to the learning focus and
have students reflect on what they have learnt.
3. •
The teacher will clearly display and
verbalise in each class the lesson focus.
Note:
Learning Focus
Learning IntentionLearning Goals
are all really synonyms and mean the same thing; it
depends on the literature you are reading
4. When setting intentions, it is
important that there is a clear
distinction between what
students will do in the lesson
and what they will learn.
5. The learning intention (or focus) for a
lesson or series of lessons is a statement
which describes clearly what the teacher
wants the students to
know
understand; and
be able to do
as a result of the learning and teaching
activities.http://www.assessmentforlearning.edu.au/professional_learning/modules/learning_intentions/learning_intentions_landing_page.html
6. Activity 1
Select 2 general statements and turn them into a learning
intention/focus/goal.
Science general statement: Understanding photosynthesis
Learning Intention: Students will be able to describe how photosynthesis functions
in terms of plant respiration, nutrition, and growth, and will be able to identify
factors that support or inhibit photosynthesis.

Now share your intention with another person

7. A learning intention/focus may stretch across a series of
lessons.
The learning intention/focus could be general - and the
success criteria specific.
Eg.
Learning Focus: Students will be able to write a persuasive
essay.
Success Criteria: I can write an introduction, I can write a
paragraph
The learning focus needs to be in student friendly language
appropriate to the year level. Some of the examples from the
Marzarno site appear to be worded for teachers not students.
