Understanding Group Discussion
(GD) and Rules to Follow
What is Group Discussion?
 Meaning..
 Number of participants: eight to twelve
 Duration: 3-5 minutes prep and 15-20 minutes for
GD.
Why GD? (Purpose)
 The group discussions are performed to assess the
interpersonal skills of a candidate
 To analyze the skills from different parameters from
that of traditional interview
Who conducts GD?
 Educational institutions
 MNCs
 Banks
 An Observer/ A panel of observers or evaluators
Types of GD
Most Group Discussions can be divided into 3 kinds:
i) Topical Group Discussion
ii) Case study
iii) Abstract Group Discussion
Evaluation Criteria in GD
 Content
 Communication Skills
 Analytical Skills
 Reasoning Skills
 Creativity
 Organizational/Group Skills:
i. Leadership Qualities
ii. Listening Skills
iii. Group Behaviour
iv. Body Language
Background Preparation
 Content Development
 Practicing Conversation
 Mock GD
Few more points to consider
1. Be up-to-date on the latest information
2. Make a habit of reading
3. Speak for yourself in front of the mirror
4. Be aware of the topics outside your area of interest
How to perform in GD?
 Understand the topic well
 Frame Sentences accordingly
 Justification of your points
 Let others speak
 Don’t digress from the topic
If you are leading the group
• Introduce yourself & give a brief note on the topic
• Discuss the pros & cons and how to overcome them
• Make everyone speak
• Support other’s points
• Make sure no digression happens
• Conclude the discussion
Few Tips
1. Grooming (appearance)
2. Be a good listener
3. Speak loudly and clearly.
4. Try to be the first and the last speaker
5. Be confident and concrete while speaking
Why do students fail to perform well in GD?
 Fear of speaking in public.
 Lack of knowledge on the topic
 No proper command on language
