The Perspective Factor
At dinner, with our family gathered around the table, my boys were seated across from each other.
James exclaimed, “I know my left and my right!” We watched as he properly pointed left and pointed
right. Gabriel was adamant that his brother was wrong as he had pointed right for left and left for right.
From his perspective, he was right, and his brother was wrong. Trying to explain the “perspective factor” is
tough for little and big minds alike!
The perspective factor is involved with life’s every interaction. Ironically, perspectives today are
represented by the left and the right. What is conservative and what is liberal? Opinions are plentiful; there-
fore, being offended is commonplace. The question remains: What is right and what is wrong? Is there
absolute truth? Is there truth regardless of perspective?
This concept has leaked into the church. I have often heard in discussion, “That’s the way you
read it. This is the way I read it.” Try using this same reasoning when you are pulled over by a police offi-
cer who asks, “Did you read the “speed limit” sign? Explain why you were speeding.” “Well officer, I read
that it said, ‘speed.’ So, I did.”
You may just get hauled off to jail for contempt, as they will throw the book at you.
Unfortunately, the book seems to be constantly revised because the Good Book has been thrown out of our
schools, courtrooms, and many of our homes. Does this flawed reasoning apply to the Bible? Can it be
rewritten or altered to fit with the present “standard” of today? The Hebrews writer explains that the word
of God is unchanging and therefore, unchangeable.
“Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their
way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be led
away by diverse and strange teachings (Hebrews 13:7-9a).
The reason the word of God is unchanging is because the words that are found within its 66 books
did not come from the perspective of man. God’s word is supernatural:
“And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay atten-
tion as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,
knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no
prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the
Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:19-21).
There are no “speed” signs that line our roads, even if we fail to read the bottom word “limit”. The
police officer would consider that ignorance of the law. The word of God is the same. You will get the
wrong message every time if you fail to approach God’s word with a desire to fully understand. Pay atten-
tion to the context of every verse (the full thought before and after a passage in question). So many con-
sider the context to be their own viewpoint, rather than the way God intended His word to be understood.
Solomon said, “Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or
to the left; turn your foot away from evil” (Proverbs 4:26,27). Do your very best to approach God’s word
without swerving and strive not to allow the interference of your perspective factor.

In What Do You Trust?
In the previous two articles we noticed from
Joshua 11 that Jabin and the Anakim had their trust in
the wrong thing. Jabin was trusting in a league of na-
tions with an army said by Josephus to consist of
300,000 foot soldiers, 10,000 cavalry and 20,000
chariots. However that league could not save him! The
Anakim were trusting in their physical strength. They
were giants that so many were afraid to fight. However
they were driven out of the land by Joshua.
The only one who had his trust in the right
place was Joshua for Joshua placed his trust in the
Lord. God had told Joshua, “Do not be afraid be-
cause of them, for tomorrow about this time I will
deliver all of them slain before Israel. You shall
hamstring their horses and burn their chariots
with fire.” (Joshua 11:6 - NKJV)
Forty years earlier the fear inspiring giants
caused the Israelites to feel like “grasshoppers” but
now Joshua trod them underfoot like so much grass in
a field. So much for the giants. Joshua’s accomplish-
ments are note worthy against such odds, it was pos-
sible because he trusted God. When Israel finally en-
tered the promised land, Caleb was an elderly man of
85 years. Caleb told the people on that day, “So
Moses swore on that day, saying, 'Surely the land
where your foot has trodden shall be your inheri-
tance and your children's forever, because you
have wholly followed the LORD my God.' 10 "And
now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, as He
said, these forty-five years, ever since the LORD
spoke this word to Moses while Israel wandered in
the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty
-five years old. 11 "As yet I am as strong this day
as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my
strength was then, so now is my strength for war,
both for going out and for coming in. 12 "Now
therefore, give me this mountain of which the
LORD spoke in that day; for you heard in that day
how the Anakim were there, and that the cities
were great and fortified. It may be that the LORD
will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them
out as the LORD said” (Joshua 14:9-12).
“When the situation is hopeless …That’s the
time for faith, for trusting in God! Actually there is no
such thing as a hopeless situation for one who trusts
in God… But the fact is that most of us turn to God
only when we think the situation is hopeless. As long
as we can find something in our circumstances on
which to pin our hope we trust that possibility rather
than God. Until we have used up all our options, and
we can see no shred of hope in our circumstances
….Then, as a last resort, we may turn to God.
Someone put it this way: ‘As long as we can think up
possible answers – we depend upon human ingenuity
– or luck – or coincidence – etc. Then, when alterna-
tives are exhausted and there is nowhere else to
turn…We give God His chance.’ How much better to
trust God no matter what!
