Paul’s Instructions On Thanksgiving
By: Tim Shoemaker
Thanksgiving has always been an important day for
those of this nation. It has always been something that God
has expected of His people. When Paul wrote his letter to
the church at Ephesus he instructed them and all Christians
of all ages about the need for gratitude in each of our lives.
Paul said, “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as
fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the
days are evil. 17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but un-
derstanding what the will of the Lord is. 18 And be not
drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with
the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody
in your heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for
all things unto God and the Father in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ” (Eph. 5:15-20).
Verse 20 identifies four things about our expressing
thanksgiving. First of all Paul tells us that we are to express
thanks always. It is a real shame when we limit our thanks-
giving to one day out of the year. Just as we are to pray
without ceasing, we ought also to give thanks without ceas-
ing. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews expressed this
when he wrote, “By him therefore let us offer the sacri-
fice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our
lips giving thanks to his name” (Heb. 13:15).
Secondly, we are to give thanks for all things. Gen-
erally speaking when we express thanks it is for such things
as our good health, our family, our jobs, our food (and all
other material blessings) and for our spiritual blessings. But
how do we react to the “negative” things in life. Job was
blessed by God with great health, wealth and family and he
was thankful but what was his reaction when he lost those
things? “But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of
the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive
good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?
In all this did not Job sin with his lips” (Job 2:10).
Also our thanks need to be directed to God for He
is the giver of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17). It is
only right, that if every good thing, every perfect gift comes
down from above, that every utterance of thanksgiving
ought to go up unto Him who gives them, that is unto God.
Every good thing we enjoy in this life is ultimately from God.
The poet said:
“Back of the loaf is the snowy flour
And back of the flour is the mill;
And back of the mill is the wheat and the shower,
And the sun and the Father’s will.”
Finally, our thanks needs to be given “in the name
of the Lord Jesus Christ.” Paul told the Colossian brethren,
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the
name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the
Father by him” (Col. 3:17). Giving thanks in the name of
Jesus is to do it as authorized by Him. It is by the authority
of Jesus that we have the privilege to come before the
throne of God in prayer. May we always be thankful for all
things at all times to God through Jesus.
