Praying for Politicians
The word politician is more often viewed negatively than it is positively. If you
were to say of anyone, “he operates like a politician”, or “he has all the integrity of a
politician”, it would not be viewed as a compliment – strangely enough! Sometimes hailed
as heroes, but more often portrayed as villains, politicians evoke strong feelings from the
masses.
Even as Christians, there are politicians who we think negatively of – sometimes
for good reason! There have been many politicians throughout history who were corrupt,
and acted grossly immoral. And while this fact is undeniable, it is all too easy to use it as
an excuse to be disrespectful and to act rebelliously against the politicians, especially those
who are corrupt. But as Christians, does God permit us to be rebellious and disrespectful
toward politicians who are immoral?
God Word teaches us that we must submit to all governing authorities (Rom. 31:1-
2; Tit. 3:1-2; 1 Pet. 2:13-14), even those that are corrupt and unreasonable (1 Pet. 2:18).
Only if our government or rulers require us to do something contrary to the
commandments of God do we have grounds to disobey them (Acts 5:29).
God’s Word also requires us to be respectful towards all people, even to our
political leaders (1 Pet. 2:17-18; Rom. 13:7). Not always easy to do, but we have no
excuse for being disrespectful.
This does not mean that we have no right call out what is wrong with politicians, or
to honestly critique their policies. Scripture speaks very clearly to the fact that we can be
open and honest in pointing out corruption in politics and policy. For example, John the
Baptist openly critiqued the politician Herod for unlawfully stealing his brother’s wife
(Mk. 6:17-18). On multiple occasions, Paul critiqued politicians for acting unlawfully or
immorally (Acts 16:37-38; 22:25-28; 23:13). So while we can do likewise, we must
remember that we can only do so with respect and great caution.
And regardless of who the politician is, God wants us to pray for them so that the
church can live in peace and harmony in this country (1 Tim. 2:1-2). Occasionally I hear
fellow Christians jokingly say, “this is how I pray for our leader”:
“Let his days be few; Let another take his office.” – Psalm 109:8
Although this is admittedly a humorous application of this verse, it is not however
the attitude with which God calls us to pray for our leaders. God desires all people to be
saved and to do what is right, especially leaders (1 Tim. 2:3-4).
As the midterms are upon us, let us not forgot to pray for all the politicians – the
good and the corrupt alike. This is what God commands us to do, and this is pleasing to
Him (1 Tim. 2:1-4). Regardless of who gets elected, let our prayers be many and often for
the politicians in this country.
