The Name Above Every Name
The name Jesus is the name above every name
and as we noted in the previous article it is the name
that offers salvation. The word “savior” as it is used
the Bible is used in different ways. It is sometimes
used of saving someone from physical illness. In
speaking to the woman who was healed of her issue of
blood, Jesus said, “But Jesus turned him about, and
when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good
comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the
woman was made whole from that hour” (Mt.
9:22).
Literally the Greek reads, “The faith of you has
saved you.”
When Jesus told His disciples that Laza-
rus was asleep and He was going to awaken him
out of sleep, they replied, “Lord, if he sleeps he
will get well” (Jn. 11:12). Again in the Greek it liter-
ally says, “Lord, if he is asleep he will be saved.” In
each of these verses the salvation is in reference to sal-
vation from physical illness. This same usage is found
also in regard to Jairus’ daughter (Luke 8:50) and the
healing of the cripple man in Acts 4:8-10.
The word “savior” is also used of salvation
from our spiritual sickness – sin. Peter told his
audience that included Annas the high priest,
Caiphas, John, Alexander and many of the family
of the high priest, “Nor is there salvation in any
other, for there is no other name under heaven
given among men by which we must be
saved” (Acts 4:12). Salvation is offered to all men but
it is only in the name of Jesus. The angel who ap-
peared to Joseph as he thought of putting Mary away,
told him, “And she will bring forth a Son, and you
shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His
people from their sins” (Mt. 1:21). The name “Jesus”
is the same as the Hebrew name Joshua which means
“Jehovah saves.” It is for that reason (that Jesus is the
Savior) that Paul told the Roman Christians, “For
"whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be
saved” (Rom. 10:13) and he explained his own salva-
tion by saying he had been told by Ananias, “And
now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized,
and wash away your sins, calling on the name of
the Lord’” (Acts 22:16). Salvation comes by calling
on the name of the Lord but it is not simply by saying,
“Lord, Lord,” but by doing the will of the Father (Mt.
7:21). We call upon the name of the Lord by arising
and being baptized.
