Every Step of The Way
I recently watched a video of a shepherd who climbed up the side of a mountain to free a sheep caught in
a fence. It was like watching a parable of Jesus in real time as he had left the majority to find one sheep that
was astray. Upon freeing the sheep, he placed it on the side of the hill, and it seemed like all was well. The
sheep, however, had been weakened from the entrapment. Its feeble legs buckled as it tumbled down the
steep embankment away from the shepherd and out of view.
Often times we strive to reach people who are caught in a struggle that has left them helpless. This can
also represent sin. Jesus, the Chief Shepherd, knows what it takes to rescue the sheep.
“What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the
ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly, I say to
you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So, it is not the will of my
Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish” (Matthew 18:12-14).
This shepherd climbed that steep incline and found the one sheep that was trapped. He freed it. He
seemed to fulfill his responsibility. He placed the sheep on what appeared to be solid ground expecting it to
stand on its own. I think sometimes we can do this unintentionally with new Christians. They make the
good confession that Jesus is Lord and repent of their sins. They are added to the body of Christ through
Baptism, while their sins are washed away. They are brand new in the eyes of God and all seems right. Yet
Satan wants them back and there will be difficulty ahead.
“ Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you
that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with
the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Corinthians
10:12-13).
This passage is to be applied individually, however, there is merit in applying it to others. If I think a new
convert can stand on their own without support, I need to take heed lest they fall. I need to walk with them
for that first mile and maybe go with them two (Matthew 5:41).
Yet so often, members are left on their own, and expected to walk alone. Sometimes they slide down the
slippery slope back into the world.
As we strive to reach out in 2020 may we be there for others every step of the way.
