I Am Building My Hope On Nothing…
When I invest every ounce of my trust in “a sure thing,” I
put stock in a market that will guarantee my family will
want for nothing. The last two weeks have proven to me
that if I do this, I am building my hope on nothing.
“
Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will
go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’— 14
yet you do not know
what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then van-
ishes. 15
Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that’” (James 4:13-15).
When I trade in my focus on stocks and bonds and turn to stocking up essentials out of fear, I am still build-
ing my hope on nothing.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in
and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where
thieves do not break in and steal. 21
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-
21).
When my heart is then turned to mass hysteria and concern for the future that no one knows but God, I am
building my hope on nothing.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. There-
fore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its
own trouble”. Matthew 6:33-34
When I allow my confidence to be in politics and expect politicians or presidents to fix what is broken in
this world, I will find disappointment along the way, because I am building my hope on nothing.
“Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs, he
returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose
hope is in the LORD his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith
forever; who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry (Psalm 146:3-7).
I will borrow from the wisdom of Solomon as I trust in the LORD with all my heart. I do not lean on my
own understanding. In all my ways I acknowledge Him, and He makes straight my paths.
You see I am building my hope on nothing... less than Jesus blood and righteousness.

Trust in God’s Word to Edify
and Comfort
Often time in his letters to God’s people Paul expressed
his concern for God’s people. He was concerned for their
physical needs as we see In Acts 20:35 when he said. “I
have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that
you must support the weak. And remember the words of
the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give
than to receive.’” But his primary concern was for their
spiritual needs. To this end Paul commended them to
God’s word. In verse 32 we read, “So now, brethren, I
commend you to God and to the word of His grace,
which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance
among all those who are sanctified.”
Paul is confident in God’s word to edify! The word of
God is able to build us up and to encourage us. In fact
God’s people have always found encouragement in His
word. David wrote of this in Psalms 119 testifying, “I
have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much
as in all riches” (119:14). Too many times we may be
tempted to think “If I had more money, I would be
happy. Everything would be great.” David understood
the foolishness of such thinking. He acknowledged that
“The law of Your mouth is better to me Than thousands
of coins of gold and silver” (Psa. 119:72). Job under-
stood this declaring, “I have not departed from the com-
mandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His
mouth More than my necessary food” (Job. 23:12).
We have been blessed more than any other nation when
it comes to the amount of food we are able to produce.
We have never known the famine of nations like Ethio-
pia but the greatest blessing we have is the Bible. In this
Psalm David continued emphasizing the importance of
God’s word saying, “How sweet are Your words to my
taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 Through
Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every
false way. 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a
light to my path.”
That same word is also able to comfort his people in
times of sorrow and troubles. It is of greater comfort than
any of us are able to give. Our intentions may be the best
but all too often they fall short. Job’s friends had good
intentions but Job declared, “Miserable comforters are
you all!” (Job 16:2). David continued in Psalm 119
speaking of the comfort to be found in God’s word.
“This is my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has
given me life…I remembered Your judgments of old, O
LORD, And have comforted myself” (Psa. 119:50, 52).
Let each of us follow David’s example and trust in
God’s word for the edification and comfort we need.

Due to current CDC recommendations on assemblies, we, as the shepherds, are en-
couraging each of you to continue your worship with us FROM HOME. We are currently
evaluating and implementing various ways to preserve the community of our Deerfoot
church and keep the church spiritually nourished. These are unprecedented times, and while
we can’t assemble physically, we can make use of diverse tools available to help bridge the
gap. Your ideas and recommendations are tremendous – please keep them coming. Your
adaptability, your expressed love of the congregation, your devotion to service, and your
patient humility are all very humbling. Please continue to check on each other and 9

Communion Supplies If you need communion supplies, come to the church building this
Saturday, March 28, between 8 and 10 a.m. You can also pick up this week’s bulletin at that
time, or you may access the bulletin on our website (www.deerfootcoc.com). On Saturday,
we will only be giving supplies for this Sunday.
Wednesday Evening – April 1-On Wednesday, April 1at 6:30 p.m. Richard will conduct
an interactive Bible class live on our Deerfoot Church of Christ Facebook page. Login dur-
ing this time to watch and add your comments and questions to the video post.
Sunday Morning – March 29
Les Self will continue the adult Bible study in Mark 10 in a Zoom meeting at 9:30am. Zoom
will allow communication with the teacher. We do ask, though, if you’re not talking, please
mute your microphone. The link to the Zoom will be provided in the Deerfoot Disciples
Facebook page as well as in our Slack channel.
Live stream of the worship service is at 10:30 a.m. again this Sunday. Please join for prayer,
another relevant lesson from Richard, and participate in singing and the Lord’s Supper.

Responses to the invitation can be directed to Richard or the elders. There is nothing to pre-
vent us from assisting someone who wishes to obey the gospel, and arrangements can be
made.
