The Unwearied Runner
Part Two
In Isaiah 40:30, 31 we read, “Even
the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men
shall utterly fall, 31 But those who wait on the LORD Shall
renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like
eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk
and not faint.” In verse 30 we noticed the fact that for all of
us there is the certainty of weariness and decay but verse 31
we learn that there is the possibility of inexhaustible power.
It is possible for us that as the spiritual battle against evil
rages that we can become stronger.
Job, who knew something about the struggles of this
life, declared that “Yet the righteous will hold to his way,
And he who has clean hands will be stronger and
stronger” (Job 17:9). Contrasted with the righteous, Paul
says that the evil goes from worse to worse. “But evil men
and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and
being deceived” (2 Tim. 3:13). So while the evil shall be-
come worse and worse, the righteous shall become stronger
and stronger.
The righteous are also likened to the palm and cedar
trees. For example in Psalm 92:12-14 we are told, “The
righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, He shall grow like
a cedar in Lebanon. 13 Those who are planted in the house
of the LORD Shall flourish in the courts of our God. 14
They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be fresh and
flourishing.” The older the palm, the sweeter the fruit, the
older the cedar, the firmer it’s rooted. When Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow attended the 50th Anniversary of
his graduating class of 1825 he wrote a lengthy poem the
latter part was something to encourage those of his class to
realize that there was much that could still be done. He
wrote:
“Something remains for us to do or dare. Even the oldest
tree some fruit may bear. For age is opportunity no less
Than Youth itself though in another dress. And as the eve-
ning twilight fades away, The sky is filled with stars invisi-
ble by day.”
As the body decays, the inner life may gain strength
daily. Paul told the church at Corinth, “We are hard pressed
on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, not in de-
spair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not
destroyed--10 always carrying about in the body the dying
of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be mani-
fested in our body.” (2 Cor. 4:8-10). Then in verse 16 he
declares “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our
outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being re-
newed day by day.” Like the planted seed, the outward part
decays while the inner part grows.
