Mission Sunday
Start prayerfully planning now!
2019 Mission Sunday will be May 5. The entire contribu-
tion that day will go toward our mission efforts at Deer-
foot Church of Christ. Last year $83,152.00 was given on
mission Sunday. Let’s try to beat that this year! Think of
all the wonderful mission efforts we can fund!
____________________________________________
Many years ago when I was a student at Freed-
Hardeman College (now University) we had brother Mid
McKnight as our guest speaker in chapel. He told of an
article that he had read in the newspaper that had the
headline, “Millionaire Reveals Secret to His Success.”
Brother McKnight said that he read the article with excite-
ment not because he hoped to become a millionaire but
because he was eager to see if the reason was Biblical
as he believed it must be. The secret was summed up in
three words – “and then some.” The man said that all his
life he had lived by that motto. When the teacher gave
them homework he did all that was assigned “and then
some.” Thus he was always prepared for the next class.
He followed this motto in his first job working after
school. He did everything his boss told him to do “and
then some.”
After graduation from college he and a friend
went into business together. They split up the responsi-
bilities for their business and each had his share to do.
He said that he did everything that was on his list “and
then some.” “That,” he said “was the secret to his suc-
cess.” Brother McKnight said, “Sure enough that was a
Biblical principle. In the great Sermon on the Mount Je-
sus said, “And whoever compels you to go one mile,
go with him two” (Mt. 5:41). If the church is to be suc-
cessful we have got to be willing to go the extra mile. Our
failures too often are due to the fact that we want to get
by on the bare minimum. When people ask “Do I have to
do this?” in reality they are wanting to do the least
amount of work possible. It’s the old attitude of “If I don’t
have to do it then I won’t.”
If the church is going to be successful there are
certain things that we need to do. As an example, for a
church to be successful the absent need to show up. No
church can be successful if the members have so little
interest in doing the will of God that they don’t even at-
tend the services of the church. So many times they ask,
“Do I have to attend all the services of the church?” Usu-
ally this is a sign of heart problems. It seems that they
don’t want to do any more than they absolutely have to.
This is one of the lessons we see the parable of the Ten
Virgins. In this parable five were wise and five were fool-
ish. What made the foolish virgins foolish? There are
several things that may be pointed out but one of them
was the fact that they tried to get to heaven on a mini-
mum of effort. They only brought enough oil for their
lamps; they brought no extra. Some people want to go to
heaven with a minimum of effort. They do not want to do
even one thing more that they have to do. Thomas Didy-
mus was absent on a Sunday evening and he missed
seeing the resurrected Christ. Jesus has promised us
that “where two or three are gathered together in My
name, I am there in the midst of them” (Mt. 18:20).
