“Take the Light”
In college, I took a course entitled, “Missions in Africa” by the late Loy Mitchell. This
man was in his late 70’s, and for a year became the missionary in residence at Freed
Hardeman University. We would begin every class with two songs. One in the Afri-
can language of Shonaand, and the other in English - “Send the Light.” We sang
"Send the Light" with a twist. He changed the word “send” to “take.”
Brother Loy was very familiar with the taking of the light. He was originally from Okla-
homa, and somehow he found himself on the African continent in the 1950’s.
He spent the rest of his life (over 50 years as I recall) in Southern Rhodesia (Now
Zimbabwe). This man studied with and baptized men who have became elders and
preachers in the church. Brother Loy and his wife learned the local language and
raised their children on the African plains. He learned what it would “take” to bring
the lost there to Christ as he gave his life in service to the Lord. His wife was taken
on to her reward in this foreign land that had become their home.
He was preparing his students to be missionaries in the fields of this world. We
learned that sending the light was just as important as taking it. Mary and I
were personally influenced by this man for the cause of Christ. We were blessed to
receive marriage counseling from him before we were wed, and we continue to use
the wisdom he imparted to us in marriage and also in our own efforts to bring the
word to the lost and suffering of this world. “Take” the light is not just a song, it is a
way of life. The mission field will “take” your dedication to it, both at home and
abroad.
Today we have an opportunity to both send and take the light as we give this Mission
Sunday. Without this gift, we cannot keep missionaries in the field. Without this gift,
we cannot send more. Without this gift, we cannot take the light to Belize and com-
munities in the States. Today, our elders ask you to give with only this understanding
in mind.

MISSION SUNDAY
"Please bring me a morsel of bread in your
hand." 12 So she said, "As the LORD your God lives,
I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin,
and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a cou-
ple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself
and my son, that we may eat it, and die." 13 And
Elijah said to her, "Do not fear; go and do as you
have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and
bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself
and your son. 14 "For thus says the LORD God of
Israel: 'The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor
shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the LORD
sends rain on the earth” (1Kings 17:11b-14.
At some point in life most of us face the problem of
dwindling resources. The story of the widow of Zarephath
should encourage us to trust the Lord to supply our
needs at all times. Our attitude toward our situation in life
and toward the needs of the church in doing the mission
work we have been called upon to do, may determine
how we give or even if we give. It has been suggested
that there are three basic attitudes that people have to-
ward giving. The first attitude is “I have to.” This is the
attitude that the law requires me to give and I’ll do it but
it’s not what I want to do. The second attitude is “I ought
to.” This is the attitude that I’m under obligation to give. It
is the duty, promise or contract by which I have bound
myself. Therefore I will give because I always keep my
obligations. The third attitude is “I want to.” Here one is
moved by love for God, their gratitude for being saved,
and their love for the lost so that they want to give.
The churches of Macedonia are an example of
such an attitude. Although the giving being discussed
was in relation to helping the poor saints in Jerusalem,
Henry Halley pointed out that the “principles here stated
should be the guide for churches in the taking of all of
their offerings. “ Here was a group of brethren that Paul
says were “imploring us with much urgency that we
would receive the gift and the fellowship of the min-
istering to the saints” (2 Cor. 8:4 NKJV). One of the
unique things about their giving was that Paul did not
have to beg them to give but that they were
“begging” (RSV) Paul to allow them to have part in that
fellowship of ministering to the saints. Paul seems to
have been reluctant to press them to give because of
their poverty. According to brother J.W. McGarvey the
people of Macedonia had suffered through three wars
which had left the people in poverty. In addition to this
the church had suffered “persecution and tribulations” (2
Thess. 1:4). Yet in spite of their poverty, they, out of
gratitude and love for the fact that they had been made
free from sin, were very urgent in begging Paul to allow
them to share in that fellowship of helping the brethren in
Jerusalem. Today what we give will be used to help bring
the good news of salvation to the lost through the differ-
ent works we have been discussing for the last several
weeks. We hope you have prayed about this and are
here with the attitude that we want to give and we will
give liberally to this great work.
