A Note From the Harp
“Close the door!” This phrase was
often directed to myself as a child. Richard
Close-the-door Harp was my name, and I
couldn’t seem to wear it out. Hot southern
summers meant high electric bills from our
outdated air system. When I would go outside,
you could hear screamed from within what I
had so blatantly forgotten to do.
It seems that right now, all of our electric bills
are going up and being somewhat balanced by
gas bills that are going down. No matter what
is going on outside, hot or cold, rain or shine, we strive to remain consistent within our own
special Edens, our castles, our homes. This brings comfort and security to our lives, regard-
less of the changing seasons outside the closed door.
“Then the LORD God said, ‘Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing
good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat and
live forever—’ therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the
ground from which he was taken. 24
He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of
Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to
the tree of life” (Genesis 3:22-24).
God closed the door. The problem for Adam and Eve is their disobedience put them
on the wrong side of it. They were now exposed, in the elements, away from the hedge
where God kept them safe, warm, and dry. Cain would eventually be sent even further
away, banished to a life of wandering (Genesis 4:12,13). Sin separates us from the love of
God. Sin closed the door to our walk with Him. What could be done to open the door again
and bring us back into the fold?
“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the
blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken
down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments
expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so
making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby
killing the hostility” (Ephesians 2:13-16).
Jesus tore down that wall and put up a door (John 10:7-9) to bring us back into the
house. May we never be stuck out in the elements of sin again, and may we enter before
God closes the door (Matthew 25:23-30).

The Way, the Truth and the Life - Part Two
In two other passages in Psalms we see the
importance of Jesus’ claim to be the Truth. In
Psalms 31:5 we read, “Into Your hand I commit
my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD God
of truth.” (NKJV) And again in Psalms 86:15
David said, “But You, O Lord, are a God full of
compassion, and gracious, Longsuffering and
abundant in mercy and truth.” The idea of truth
here is that of fidelity, truth in the sense of when a
lover says, “I’ll be true to you.” The Bible makes it
abundantly clear that Jesus is the one we can rely
on absolutely without fear that He will fail us. Jesus
is faithful to His disciples. When those soldiers
came out to arrest Jesus we are told that He went
forward to them “and said to them, "Whom are
you seeking?" 5 They answered Him, "Jesus of
Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am He." And
Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them.
6 Now when He said to them, "I am He," they
drew back and fell to the ground. 7 Then He
asked them again, "Whom are you seeking?"
And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth. 8 Jesus an-
swered, ‘I have told you that I am He. Therefore,
if you seek Me, let these go their way.’” Jesus’
concern was not for Himself but for His disciples.
He wanted them to be allowed to leave without be-
ing arrested with Him. Then in Hebrews 2:17 we
are told, “Therefore, in all things He had to be
made like His brethren, that He might be a mer-
ciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining
to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the
people.” And again in 2 Timothy 2:13 Paul tells
us, “If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He
cannot deny Himself.”
As one looks at the Greek background of
this word “truth” (Aletheia in the Greek) we learn
that truth is distinguished from falsehood. Truth is
that which is real genuine as opposed to that which
is unreal and counterfeit. This means that we come
face to face with Jesus as truth and reality. We go
beyond the guesses, the perhaps and maybes. We
go beyond the counterfeits and substitutes, the imi-
tations and shadows and arrive at reality.
In the gospel of John we see truth not as
something intellectual or simply something to be
known but as something to be done. For example in
John 3:21 we are told, “But he who does the
truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be
clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
Again in 1 John 1:6 we read, “If we say that we
have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness,
we lie and do not practice the truth.”
