His Story- Not Ours
History is a never-ending entity that is not far from every one of us. The moment my last sentence was
jotted down, it became history. We are also closer to our past than we realize. I shook hands with
Abraham Lincoln (let me explain). A professor at FHU introduced this concept to me after he greeted
me. He said, “I shook hands with a man who shook hands with Abraham Lincoln.” Thus, in a round-
about way, I shook hands with Abraham Lincoln (through just two people in time). Today, the 22nd
of
July, marks the 154th
year that General Sherman defeated the Confederates in the Battle of Atlanta.
This fact is literally close to home as I heard my 92-year-old next door neighbor (when in Ohio) re-
mark, “As I am telling you, my grandfather told me, ‘when I was in the war, we marched through At-
lanta and burned it.’”
History is fascinating and eye-opening. History is not just facts on a page, but legacies in our
neighbor’s living rooms or the strangers we meet on the street. Written history is a window into the
past. We may draw the blinds on this window and refuse to peer out of it, but we will ironically remain
blind to what took place and may be ignorant enough to repeat past mistakes.
God in His infinite wisdom sent His Son to this earth at the perfect time in history. The
known world had experienced war through Alexander the Great, thereby forcing all to speak the Greek
language. The Greeks were conquered by the Romans and the Romans were smart and learned Greek.
This Greek was called Koine. It means the “common language of the day.” This is the language the
New Testament was written in and most all people during that time would have been able to read it.
The Bible gives us a glimpse into the mind of God. All 66 books reveal a plan that would unite all
people in History through Christ and His story. Without Christ we would all be lost and those from the
past to the future would be in jeopardy. In fact, Paul explained this to the Corinthian Church. “…if
Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile, and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have
fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people
most to be pitied (1 Corinthians 15:17-19). Through Christ, we are connected to all Christians in the
past, present, and future who have obeyed God’s word concerning the Church established in the
1st
Century. Being connected to Christ is more important than being connected to Abraham Lincoln or
General Sherman. If we could trace our line all the way back to Alexander the Great, it would be
unique, yet pale in comparison to finding our connection to Christ. Everyone can be connected to
Christ through the teaching of His word and obedience to its doctrine. There have been many in our
past who have sought to distort this word through man-made creeds and religions in history. May we
all seek to restore the Church Christ died for and find what unites us all in His Story - not ours.

Woodcutters Through the Forest – Part Three
Jesus was a teacher. He is never called a
preacher in the gospels. Forty-five times He is called a
teacher; twenty-three times by the disciples; six times by
Himself, and twelve times by His enemies. A teacher
may make the way easier for the pupils.
“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell
where his influence may stop.” Whether or not one will
be able to succeed in living the Christian life may depend
upon the teachings received in Bible class.
All of us by our influence can be woodcutters
through the forest. We need to be consistent in our life.
The adage, “Practice what you preach” is important for
us to remember and follow. To do otherwise is to betray
God. Someone once said, “A man must be something
before he can do anything.”
This is another way of saying that we speak by our man-
ner of life as well as by our words. The apostle Paul
wrote to the church at Corinth and reminded them, “You
are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read
by all men” (II Cor. 3:2).
We also need be uncompromising for by com-
promising the truth you lose the respect of others. Again
notice Paul’s words to Timothy in his second epistle.
“Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of
season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuf-
fering and teaching” (II Tim. 4:2). Marshall Keeble
used to say, “that means preach it when they want to
hear it and when they don’t want to hear it.”
We need to serve the needs of others. Our
Lord let it be known that greatness in His kingdom comes
by serving, telling His disciples, “But he who is great-
est among you shall be your servant” (Matthew
23:11).
The Bridgebuilder
An old man, going a lone highway,
Came at the evening cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast and deep and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim-
That sullen stream had no fears for him;
But he turned, when he reached the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.
"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near,
"You are wasting strength in building here.
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again must pass this way.
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide,
Why build you the bridge at the eventide?"
The builder lifted his old gray head.
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said,
"There followeth after me today
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm that has been naught to me
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building the bridge for him."
By the way we live, we either make it easier or
harder for someone to live for God. We either erect barri-
ers or destroy them. Are we woodcutters through the for-
est?

His Story- Not Ours History is a never-ending entity that is not far from every one of us. The moment my last sentence was jotted down, it became history. We are also closer to our past than we realize. I shook hands with Abraham Lincoln (let me explain). A professor at FHU introduced this concept to me after he greeted me. He said, “I shook hands with a man who shook hands with Abraham Lincoln.” Thus, in a round- about way, I shook hands with Abraham Lincoln (through just two people in time). Today, the 22nd of July, marks the 154th year that General Sherman defeated the Confederates in the Battle of Atlanta. This fact is literally close to home as I heard my 92-year-old next door neighbor (when in Ohio) re- mark, “As I am telling you, my grandfather told me, ‘when I was in the war, we marched through At- lanta and burned it.’” History is fascinating and eye-opening. History is not just facts on a page, but legacies in our neighbor’s living rooms or the strangers we meet on the street. Written history is a window into the past. We may draw the blinds on this window and refuse to peer out of it, but we will ironically remain blind to what took place and may be ignorant enough to repeat past mistakes. God in His infinite wisdom sent His Son to this earth at the perfect time in history. The known world had experienced war through Alexander the Great, thereby forcing all to speak the Greek language. The Greeks were conquered by the Romans and the Romans were smart and learned Greek. This Greek was called Koine. It means the “common language of the day.” This is the language the New Testament was written in and most all people during that time would have been able to read it. The Bible gives us a glimpse into the mind of God. All 66 books reveal a plan that would unite all people in History through Christ and His story. Without Christ we would all be lost and those from the past to the future would be in jeopardy. In fact, Paul explained this to the Corinthian Church. “…if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile, and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied (1 Corinthians 15:17-19). Through Christ, we are connected to all Christians in the past, present, and future who have obeyed God’s word concerning the Church established in the 1st Century. Being connected to Christ is more important than being connected to Abraham Lincoln or General Sherman. If we could trace our line all the way back to Alexander the Great, it would be unique, yet pale in comparison to finding our connection to Christ. Everyone can be connected to Christ through the teaching of His word and obedience to its doctrine. There have been many in our past who have sought to distort this word through man-made creeds and religions in history. May we all seek to restore the Church Christ died for and find what unites us all in His Story - not ours. -Richard

Tim Shoemaker ATTENDANCE FOR JULY 15, 2018 AM 420 PM 204 Upcoming Events for the Youth AIMcon July 20-22 Local Campaign July 27-28 Gospel Meeting July 29-Aug. 1 Woodcutters Through the Forest – Part Three Jesus was a teacher. He is never called a preacher in the gospels. Forty-five times He is called a teacher; twenty-three times by the disciples; six times by Himself, and twelve times by His enemies. A teacher may make the way easier for the pupils. “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence may stop.” Whether or not one will be able to succeed in living the Christian life may depend upon the teachings received in Bible class. All of us by our influence can be woodcutters through the forest. We need to be consistent in our life. The adage, “Practice what you preach” is important for us to remember and follow. To do otherwise is to betray God. Someone once said, “A man must be something before he can do anything.” This is another way of saying that we speak by our man- ner of life as well as by our words. The apostle Paul wrote to the church at Corinth and reminded them, “You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men” (II Cor. 3:2). We also need be uncompromising for by com- promising the truth you lose the respect of others. Again notice Paul’s words to Timothy in his second epistle. “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuf- fering and teaching” (II Tim. 4:2). Marshall Keeble used to say, “that means preach it when they want to hear it and when they don’t want to hear it.” We need to serve the needs of others. Our Lord let it be known that greatness in His kingdom comes by serving, telling His disciples, “But he who is great- est among you shall be your servant” (Matthew 23:11). The Bridgebuilder An old man, going a lone highway, Came at the evening cold and gray, To a chasm, vast and deep and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim- That sullen stream had no fears for him; But he turned, when he reached the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide. "Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near, "You are wasting strength in building here. Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again must pass this way. You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build you the bridge at the eventide?" The builder lifted his old gray head. "Good friend, in the path I have come," he said, "There followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building the bridge for him." By the way we live, we either make it easier or harder for someone to live for God. We either erect barri- ers or destroy them. Are we woodcutters through the for- est?
