“Save Yourselves”
The word “salvation” is defined by Webster’s
New Collegiate Dictionary as “escape from the spiri-
tual consequences of sin.” Thus when Peter com-
manded his hearers in Acts 2:40 telling them to
“Save yourselves from this crooked genera-
tion” (ASV), he was telling them to escape from the
spiritual consequences of their sins. What Peter said
on that occasion was not a statement of his opinions
but rather was the message of the Holy Spirit. We
know that Peter and the other apostles “were all
filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with
other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utter-
ance” (Acts 2:4).
There are certain implications in Peter’s state-
ment that are very important. First, there is the impli-
cation that man has a soul that is worth saving. Man is
created in the image of God. God Himself said “Let
us make man in our image, after our likeness: and
let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,
and over the birds of the heavens, and over the
cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creep-
ing thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 And
God created man in his own image, in the image of
God created he him; male and female created he
them” (Gen. 1:26, 27). Dr. Clyde Woods points out in
his commentary on Genesis that “the two words
‘image’ and ‘likeness’ combine to indicate the dignity
and value of man.” Man is the highest of all other life
created by God and this is emphasized again by the
fact that God gave to man the authority over all other
creatures.
God loves all mankind even those who are in sin
and it was while we were in sin that God gave His Son
to die for us (Romans 5:6-8). Man’s soul is of greater
value than all of this world. Jesus said, “For what
shall a man be profited, if he shall gain the whole
world, and forfeit his life? or what shall a man give
in exchange for his life?” (Mt. 16:26) Man is not
able to gain the whole world. Man’s life and power are
too limited but even if he was able to gain the whole
world and he did so at the expense of his soul, he
would be the loser. How much more would that be
true of the individual who gains only a meager part of
this world at the loss of his soul?
Man’s soul will live forever and ever in some
place. It will either be in heaven or in hell (Mt. 35:46;
John 5:28, 29). Men will spend thousands if not mil-
lions of dollars to save their physical life that will ulti-
mately die. But our soul will never die. How much
more is it worth that it might be saved from hell?
