Ephesians 2:10
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ
Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we
should walk in them.
Freedom from the Guilt of Sin
By: Tim Shoemaker
We noticed in our last article that guilt is something that
robs us of our joy and causes many to live in fear. How-
ever, the good news is that the Christian is not only freed
from his sin, he is also freed from the guilt of sin!
Paul had done much in his life to produce guilt
within himself. Paul persecuted the church, and gave
great evidence of his actions against them. To the Jews
Paul said, “I persecuted this way unto the death,
binding and delivering into prisons both men and
women. As also the high priest doth bear me wit-
ness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom
also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to
Damascus, to bring them which were there bound
unto Jerusalem, for to be punished…And I said,
Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every
synagogue them that believed on thee: And when the
blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was
standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept
the raiment of them that slew him” (Acts 22:4, 5, 19,
20). In his first letter to Timothy Paul described himself
as one who had been a blasphemer, a persecutor and an
injurious person (I Tim. 1:12, 13). As a blasphemer he
had “spoken evil against holy things”. Paul would have
never blasphemed God, but he did blaspheme Jesus.
The word “persecutor” means, “to put to flight, drive
away, to pursue”. Thus Paul had sought to drive Chris-
tians away (perhaps from their faith). The word
“Injurious” was used to describe one who was “an inso-
lent man, one who, uplifted with pride, either heaps in-
sulting language upon others or does them some shame-
ful act of wrong” (Thayer). But when confronted by the
risen Christ, Paul became a man that was ridden with
guilt. Commanded by the Lord to go to the city where he
would be told what he was to do, Paul obeyed and he
was in Damascus for three days without eating or drink-
ing. His guilt had robbed him of his joy and peace, and
he could not eat. But when he became obedient to Jesus
by being baptized to wash away his sins (Acts 22:16) he
was then able to eat and receive strength (Acts 9:19).
Just as his lack of desire to eat was a sign of his feeling
of guilt, so now when he has become obedient and had
his sins removed, so that he then received food is a sign
that his guilt has been removed. When one responds to
obey Christ he needs to realize that his sins have been
forgiven and because those sins have been removed we
no longer have to carry the feelings of guilt for the guilt
has also been removed.
