Is There Real Meaning to Life with _______? Who Is Dead Weight? A ball I was playing with landed on the roof and skidded to a halt in the gutter. My Dad knew what to do. He lifted me by the ankles, and my 4 foot 10 inch frame was boosted to more like 10 foot 4! I clutched the gutter in one hand, the ball in the other, and the day was saved. Around the same timeframe, someone much bigger than me made an observation. They said, “I could pick you up with ease!” I let them attempt it, but I was not going to help them in their condescending pursuit of a literal pick-me-up. I was certain that the only “up” experienced would be every fiber and sinew in my body tensing up. Not one of my muscles was going to aid in them lifting their pride and my frame simultaneously. If they succeeded, at the very least, it would not be with ease. I would become a stone. I would be dead weight. Maybe you’ve heard the phrase: “Help those who help themselves.” Or, “It’s much easier lifting someone who helps in the lifting process.” How about this one: “Don’t expect change from dead weight, it’ll be a long wait.” “You dug yourself into a hole, now dig yourself out.” It is very challenging to even attempt to help someone that does not want to be helped. It’s a challenge because while you seek to lift, they might seek to pull. But how does God come into the equation? Can we help those who do not seem to want it? Should we? Are we obligated to help? What is the answer? When does someone become dead weight? We have phrases for that too. “Once bitten, twice shy.” “Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.” People become dead weight and in the process, dead to us pretty quickly by these social norms. Social norms create the weight in the first place. What we expect of those who stumble is, “Get clean, and then I will help you.” But what they so desperately is need your help at that time to get clean. What did Jesus do for us? “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:6-8). Paul says that we would only die for an exemplary person. This is a person that, if given the occasion, would die for us. We often would not be inconvenienced by someone we considered dead weight, let alone die for them. But did you notice, Jesus died for you when you were dead weight? While we were still in the filth of our sin, He died. He didn’t say, “I’m going to wait till you are clean before I give my life for you.” He did it before we even wanted it. Before we knew we needed it. If Jesus did that for you, how can you deny someone else the same? So that ALL PEOPLE could be saved from sin’s eternal weight, Jesus literally became dead weight. No one should be considered dead weight. Suggested reading: Matthew 25:31–46 and Galatians 6:1-5 A Note From the Harp
