They’re Just Words
Are there any consequences to the words we say, send, or post? My wife and I recently had to deal
with a phrase our four-year-old said that he knows to be wrong. He said God’s name flippantly in a
phrase that is extremely serious and never used in our household. Are we just overly concerned par-
ents, or is there anything actually wrong with saying God’s name in vain? It is spoken and typed con-
stantly in the form of OMG. Often, people do not even realize what they are saying or writing.
The first law that God gave to a people who had been slaves in a foreign land was one that distin-
guished God above all else. Israel knew bondage for 430 years and was daily inundated with other
people, places, or things that pointed away from the God of Creation. God told them what they needed
to hear to bring them back to Him.
“And God spoke all these words, saying, ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of
Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me…’ ‘You shall not take the
name of the Lord our God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in
vain’” (Exodus 20:1-3; 7).
When God spoke, He indicated that what mankind does and says in regard to Him is the difference
between guilt or blamelessness.
Under the New Covenant, Jesus defined how important our speech is concerning Judgment Day.
“I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by
your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36, 37).
The Apostle Paul explains that our speech is directly related to our Christian walk. It is of utmost impor-
tance that what we say matches what we do.
“Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gra-
cious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person” (Colossians
4:5,6).
Paul says that the impression left with others is our responsibility. We can easily leave a bad taste in
people’s mouths by the things we say. Jesus explained this taste when He referred to those who would
be a part of the His Kingdom.
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no
longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of
the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but
on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so
that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:13-16).
My son received a punishment of no Legos for a day. This was adequate for him to learn how serious
God is about His name. If we want to honor God and give Him praise and glory, we will watch what we
say. They’re not just words. A note from the Harp.

Encouragement to the Church – Part 2
In our last article we spoke of Paul’s encourage-
ment that they remain steadfast. When Paul spoke of
the Christians at Philippi he called them his “joy and
crown.” There are two words used in the New Testa-
ment that are translated as “crown.” The one that Paul
uses here is stephanos which was the crown of the
victorious athlete at the Greek games. To win such a
crown was the height of an athlete’s ambition. But it
was also the crown that was given to the guests at a
great banquet or feast at a time of great joy. Paul was
the athlete of Christ and the Philippians were his
crown. It was as if Paul said: “At the final banquet of
God, the Philippians would be his crown.”
The church needed to stand fast! It is interesting
here that Paul uses the word that was used of soldiers
standing fast in the battle when the enemy surges
down upon him. It is at just such a time when one’s
every inclination is to flee for safety that one is called
upon to stand firm. We are to stand fast in the Lord.
Many are a great help in keeping us from sin. It is eas-
ier to do right when we are with them. The greatest
friend we have, the One who can help us to stand fast
against sin, is Jesus.
However, when there is strife between brethren
it is a discouragement to us and causes us to lose that
steadfastness in battle that we need. Therefore the
church needs to heal the hurts that exists between
brethren. For example in his letter to the church at
Philippi the apostle Paul spoke to try and heal the
strife between two of the sisters in that church. Paul
told them, “I implore Euodia and I implore Syn-
tyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. 3 And I
urge you also, true companion, help these women
who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement
also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose
names are in the Book of Life” Euodia and Syn-
tyche were two women who had quarreled in the
church. We don’t know what the problem was but it
seemed to have threatened the unity of the church.
These women as well as the whole church needed to
live in harmony with each other. A quarreling church
cannot be a successful church. Therefore Paul calls
upon those of the church to help these women to heal
their problems. In particular Paul mentioned one indi-
vidual whom he addresses as “true companion.” We
do not know who this individual is but he is called
upon (along with Clement) and other “fellow-workers”
to help solve the problems. Others are mentioned but
not by name. Though we do not know their names,
God knows them and Paul tells us that their names
are written in the book of life. Remember the words of
our Lord when He said, “Blessed are the peacemak-
ers: for they shall be called the children of
God” (Mt. 5:9).
