Christian Ethics in the Workplace
By: Tim Shoemaker
When we speak of Christian ethics what are we talk-
ing about? First of all we need to understand what we
mean by the word “ethics.” What is ethics? Ethics is a
division of philosophy called axiology or value. It involves
values and concerns human conduct. It seeks to answer
questions involving right conduct, or character. It seeks
to set standards, prescribe norms and to give ideals.
For Christians there are certainly standards that
have been set up that we must follow! Christian ethics
are not standards established by men but by God. But it
has been observed that “There perhaps has never been
a time when Christians ethics has been so attacked,
when the “soul of [twenty-first] century man no longer
feeds on objective and eternal norms, but is content with
ethical leftovers.”
But we want to speak primarily about Christian
ethics in the workplace. Work is ordained of God for all
mankind. God Himself is a worker! God worked for six
days creating the earth, and then He rested from His
work. God’s work in the physical creation continues as
He up holds all things by the power of His might
(Hebrews 1:3). Work is not a curse resulting from sin.
God placed man in the garden and gave to him the re-
sponsibility of dressing and keeping it (Genesis 2:15).
This was prior to man’s sin, and thus was not a punish-
ment for his sin. While God provided a day of rest, He
also provided 6 days for labor. “Six days thou shalt
work….” (Ex. 34:21). Labor is necessary for man’s
maintenance. The apostolic dictum is still universally true
– “If any man would not work, neither should he
eat” (II Thess. 3:10).
First let us look at the Jewish background for
work ethics. It was a Jewish requirement that every fa-
ther teach his child three things – (1) the Law, (2) how to
swim, and (3) a trade. The ancient rabbis said: “He who
does not teach his child a trade, teaches him to steal.”
But it is not enough just to have a trade, or to work. One
must be honest in his trade. “Of all crafts to be an honest
man is the mastercraft.” The wise man Solomon taught
the value of a proper work ethic. “A false balance is an
abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his de-
light” (Proverbs 11:1). But the nation of Israel had
move away from such ethics and many tried to justify
themselves by the fact that they had profited by their lack
of proper ethics. Hosea wrote of them, “A trader in
whose hands are false balances, he loves to op-
press. Ephraim has said, ‘Ah, but I am rich, I have
gained wealth for myself’; but all his riches can
never offset the guilt he has incurred” (Hoses 12:7,
8).
