The present is a gift. Will you open it?
The Psalmist said it best, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm
118:24). Today is a present, and the present is a gift.
When we do not see the special nature of this moment, we may take it for granted and be lost in thought
about a different time. How often do we spend our days thinking about our past?
Maybe things we should have done differently?
The irony is that this type of thought routine affects the decisions we make in the “now.” It is a vicious
cycle that can steal the moments we are granted. We cannot change the past. We cannot go back in time.
Yet our minds can relive that moment over and over as if we were there all over again.
Time can also be spent focused on good memories. The “golden years” can serve to tarnish the present
moment that is spent longing for what once was. Both perspectives can choke out our existence for what
we are granted.
The apostle Paul weighed in on the concept of dwelling on the past: “Brothers, I do not consider that I
have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies
ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-
14).
Paul’s example is the right plan of action. Forget what lies behind because there is nothing we can do
about any of it. In fact, he says this is a sign of maturity in the following verse:
“Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that
also to you” (Philippians 3:15).
Paul is telling us that the mature person will use the present and press on to the upward goal in
Christ. The immature person will pine for what once was or repine for what it wasn’t. He leaves it open for
you and I to choose. He establishes that whatever path you choose, God will reveal what was right.
In essence, you may not be able to let go of the past and may not know how to. Paul is saying to trust in
God and let the past go. You’ll be glad you did, or sorry you did not.
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm
118:24). Today is a present, and the present is a gift. Will you open it?

We Are Called to Serve
In his first epistle to the church at Corinth the
apostle Paul reminded them of our call to serve tell-
ing the brethren, “Let a man so consider us, as
servants of Christ and stewards of the myster-
ies of God” (1 Cor. 4:1). The normal word for ser-
vant is diakonos which was used of one who was a
servant to a king; to one who was a deacon in the
church and called to serve and to a waiter “one who
serves food and drink” (Thayer, p. 138). But in this
verse Paul uses the word huparetas which means
“an under rower, subordinate rower.” “Anyone who
serves with his hands; a servant” (ibid, p.641). It
had reference to the slave serving on a galley ship.
But in time it lost that meaning and began to be
used of anyone under the authority of another.
At the Passover Feast when Jesus instituted
the Lord’s Supper He taught a valuable lesson
about service. On the way the disciples had been
discussing who would be the greatest in the king-
dom. Normally, upon entering a home there would
be a slave present to wash your feet. However,
there was none present to do so. Evidently none of
the disciples were willing to do this lowly task. So
Jesus began to wash their feet. He told them, “Ye
call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so
I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have
washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one
another's feet. 15 For I have given you an exam-
ple, that ye should do as I have done to you. 16
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not
greater than his lord; neither he that is sent
greater than he that sent him” (Jn. 13:13-16).
Jesus expects and requires that we follow His
example and be servants. In Matthew 20:25-26 Je-
sus called His disciples and told them, “You know
that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,
and those who are great exercise authority over
them. 26 "Yet it shall not be so among you; but
whoever desires to become great among you,
let him be your servant.” These disciples changed
their lives and became great servants. Just a few
short years after Jesus had given the great commis-
sion, Paul could write, “If ye continue in the faith
grounded and settled, and be not moved away
from the hope of the gospel, which ye have
heard, and which was preached to every crea-
ture which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am
made a minister” (Col. 1:23). They did this without
the benefit of radio, television, internet, planes, cars
etc. They succeeded because they were dedicated,
committed servants of Jesus Christ.
