To foster interaction and autonomy (Paloff & Pratt, 2007)
To changes the role of the instructor to that of a facilitator, interaction is more student-driven

To extend interaction possibilities beyond classroom walls; time constraints; and the usual limited type of interlocutors of classroom pair and group work (Belcher,99)
To construct language socially through interaction with one’s environment (Hymes, 1971).
To allow learners to engage in “playful” interaction (Belz & Reinhardt, 2004)
To enhance opportunities and motivation for authentic interaction and meaning negotiation (Kern, 1995)

Education – A key to power “We should not give the Natives any academic education. If we do, who is going to do the manual labour in the community?"JN le Roux, National Party politician, 1945.
Pedagogy of the oppressed Paulo Freire “…a teacher who learns and a learner who teaches so that both are simultaneouslystudents and teachers.” laying the foundation for critical pedagogy

The face of the 21st century learner
The online learner is usually.... ,[object Object]
Extrinsically motivated – may have to take an oral test
Generally tech-savvy - digital native - at ease in the virtual environment
Genuine desire to learn and share knowledge,[object Object]
On the spot error correction – doesn`t break the flow
Students can send links
Conversation evolves and flows – students build, share knowledge! St can speak and send txt msg
More error correction – more sharing...the new student says: I AM WONDERFUL!!!!

I'm 14 and I just finished the Young Express 6, but my english is quite good! In my opinion the chat is the best way to improve the english, but unfortunatelly the students do not join it. I think it should be more divulgated, the teachers should tell the students that there is a chat, and they should use it. The chat is a very interesting way of learning where you can express your opinion, hear others opinios, discuss about any kind of subject and learn not only english vocabulary, but also pronounciation and gramatic. The chat is perfect! It is certainly one of the best ways to improve your english and have fun at the same time. "Lucas Brandão, From CulturaInglesaIlha

Hi Vaddie!I've been taking a lot of advantage of the network use in my English practice! As an international trader, I must send lots of e-mails and trade in yahoo messenger. It is a quicker way of communication and also help me to practice writing and overcome the difficulty in communication due to so many different accent. It has also been great for personal use, as in yahoo messenger we can chat with people throughout the world and in a very informal way, learning their spoken English without leaving home and without paying an expensive telephone bill!
