Overview
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New
York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder
committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing
bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the
police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is
nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a
boy?
2. This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to
ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a
Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within
twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her
mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would
demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how
did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .
Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously
entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to
end.
Reviews
Fifteen-year-old Clary Fray thinks she is just a normal teenager. I mean, of
course she is a normal teenage, she lives in Brooklyn with her artist mom, and
spends most of her time with her best friend, Simon. One night when Clary and
Simon are at a club, Pandemonium, she figures out that she can see people that
nobody else can. Wham! Not so normal, I guess. The people that she can see
are called Shadowhunters. They go around killing demons and such, you know
the bad guys.
Not too soon after Clary makes her big discovery, her mom is kidnaped. Clary is
entering this new world pretty much blind, except for the Shadowhunters which
happen to be three teenagers. Jace, Isabelle and Alec must help Clary to find her
mother. It seems that her mother is the only one who knows the whereabouts of
the Mortal Cup, which can turn other people into Shadowhunters. But the man
that kidnaped Clary’s mother plans to use to cup for evil purposes, of course. So
Clary must help figure out where the cup is to rescue her mom, fight to keep her
friendship with Simon and figure out the complicated feelings she has toward
Jace.
Whew! This book was fast-paced and fantastic. I couldn’t stop myself from
turning the pages to see what would happen next. There is a whole world not
only of Shadowhunters but werewolves, vampires. demons, and faeries too!
Although, not as to ruin the surprises in the book, I did have a couple things
figured out way before they were revealed in the story.
I was having a dry season when I decided to pick this book up...I just expected
it to be another tryhard modern fantasy. Man, was I wrong.
3. I loved this book from start to finish. Clary is everything anyone can look for in a
Fantasy heroine, and more. She's brave, fierce (and of course oblivous to her
incredible beauty), but she's also so refreshingly real. Jace is also very
believable - so much in fact, that I'm sure everyone can name at least three
people who match his obnoxious ego, arrogant charm and intolerable temper.
The pacing of the story was perfect - nothing was too rushed, and none of it
seemed to depend on pure convenience. Clary's reactions, thoughts and
emotions were very human, and I was happy to finally read a book which didn't
remind me that it WAS all concocted inside someone's head, and that the
characters had been shaped to fit with the storyline. For once, it seems the plot
has been fitted around the character.
Cassandra Clare has begun a new era of fantasy. She has, I believe, found the
balance between urban legends and traditional fantasy, so the book is lacking in
neither credability or magic. One of the most unique fantasies you'll ever read.
OMG!!!! The best series I've ever read!! It has an amazing plot with a bit of a
twist that keeps you turning the pages for more. Cassandra Clare is an excellent
writer and really connects you to each character. I felt like I was there in every
scene feeling what they felt, experiencing every battle. I couldn't help but fall
deeply in love with Jace. And of course Clary, she's awesome! I loved Isabelle
and Alec and Simon and Luke. You became part of their world, scary but
adventurous and exciting.
So all you haters out there, if you haven't read the book don't judge. Read it,
even the first chapter. It will suck you in like quicksand!!!
City of Bones was an exciting, UF book, even if it was a bit long-winded at times.
The story centers around Clarey, a seemingly normal girl in NYC who gets
involved with a group of Shadowhunters. Shadowhunters are the group that
hunts and destroys demons that are breaking the Clave's (the supernatural
world's power structure)rules. My first problem with this book occurs here. Once
Clarey finds out about this supernatural world, she doesn't really question it. I'd
be freaking out. She's all - whatevs.
The action gets going quickly. Someone breaks into Clarey's apartment, her
mother disappears, her close family friend doesn't want anything to do with her,
and she falls in with a group of teenage Shadowhunters, including the brother
4. and sister combo of Isabelle and Alec, and the gorgeous, cocky, yet vulnerable,
Jace. The following adventures in this book surround finding information out for
Clarey about her past (she finds out why she can see throgh glamour) and
locating her missing mother. The ending is a shocker, but I wouldn't call it a cliff
hanger. Another thing I was shocked by was the betrayal of the group by a
trusted friend. I didn't see that one coming.
Clarey is a strong girl. Altough I question some of her choices and reactions, she
is just trying to keep herself together amidst all these revelations about her and
her family. She is certainly brave, if nothing else.
Jace is cocky, yet charming. He acts like a tough guy, but is vulnerable
underneath it all. He has golden hair and eyes. He's loyal and protective, and
immediately takes a liking to Clarey. There is romantic tension between these
two, and a very sweet greenhouse scene. I was sold on this couple after the
greenhouse. Really. I was.
Isabelle acts like a bitch for most of this book, but you can tell that she's a very
loyal girl with some very teen age reactions. She's not nice to Clarey at first
because she's jealous - she's been the only belle at the ball for a long time now.
Although she is bitchy, you can tell that Isabelle is loyal to those whom she
cares for, and is willing to do anything to protect them. By the end of this book,
I think Isabelle and Clarey are on much better terms.
Isabelle's brother, Alec, is an interesting one. He begins the story by hating
Clarey. Not being jealous or disliking, but he has flat-out venomous feelings
towards Clarey, which we find out about later in this book. Alec seems to soften
by the end of this book, too, and I look forward to reading more about him in
the future.
City of Bones is a wonderful start to The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra
Clare. It is a story about love, deception, betrayal, family, and friendship. I
remember the first time I tried to read it, I wasn't able to get into the story line
because I didn't think the plot was interesting. But thankfully, The Clockwork
Angel changed all of that for me and I guess this is where it all began. I'm truly
looking forward to reading more of Cassandra Clare's books and finding out how
the Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments series are connected.
5. The story itself, is about a teenage girl named Clary Fray who is unsure of her
identity in the world ever since she discovers that she is a Shadowhunter and
who her real father is. Eventually, she is thrust into a world of Nephilim-- the
Shadowhunters, the Downworlders-- werewolves, vampires, faeries, and even
demons. But her life soon takes a turn for the worse, when she finds out that
her mother was attacked by a demon and is rescued by a Shadowhunter named,
Jace Wayland. I have to admit that the beginning was slow, but the author soon
picks up the pace after Clary wakes up to find herself inside of the Institute
where the Shadowhunters resides and meets Isabelle, Alex, and Jace. From the
very beginning, I always knew that there was something special about Jace. He
oddly reminds me of Will Herondale from The Clockwork Angel... so that must be
a BIG clue as to who his parents are later in the books. I'll just have to wait and
find out!
Let's take a deeper look on the characters of The Mortal Instruments series, shall
we? Clary Fray is not only a tough heroine but she is also full of wit and
backbone. She's not afraid to talk back to Jace and I absolutely love the
chemistry between the two. Jace believes that she is beautiful, even if she
doesn't know it, and I think that is the reason why he is attracted to her. As for
Jace Wayland himself, he is sexy, sarcastic, and I have to say, a very intriguing
character. And the ending of the book, holy cow. Another big betrayal and
deception coming from the one and only Valentine. I never would have guessed
it but I definitely refuse to believe that is true!
To sum up this review, this series has earned a place on my pedestal of books
and I'm truly looking forward to reading more of these books. I can't believe I
waited this long to start this series but hey, it's better late than never!
I bought this book on Monday before I was leaving to go to TwiCon in Dallas on
Thursday. I sat down to look at it for a few minutes and before I knew it hours
had passed and I HAD to finish it. I didn't have time to read that week, but this
book just drew me in. As I learned about the world of Shadowhunters, I also was
intrigued by the characters and discovered that world along with red-haired
Clary whose mother had been kidnapped. Thrust into a world of strangers who
were definitely not as they seemed and sharing some of that with her long time
friend, Simon, she finds danger and intrigue. Blond golden eyed Jace irritates
her but attracts her too. She realizes he and his step brother and sister are the
only link to finding her mother. This is a story of not only Shadowhunters but
vampires, werewolves, faeries, demons. It brought me to one of my favorite
series I have ever read.
6. If I have a favorite book hero in all the books I have read, it is Jace. He is cocky
and wild but with a past that haunts him....the beautiful dangerous golden boy
warrior. The love story in this books is disturbing and the epitome of forbidden
love. As everyone who has read these books always tells those first reading City
of Bones.....just keep reading.
PS added 11/2010 The audio CD is awesome!
I just finished my third time of reading this book and loved it all over again. And
just found out my granddaughter just finished all three for the second time.
They are a great re-read!
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare is a great book. It takes awhile to get into, but
once you do you can't stop reading. Clary was just an ordinary girl until one
night she witnesses a murder in her favorite nightclub. Three tattooed teenagers
kill a mysterious blue haired boy- and she's the only one who can see them.
When Clary's mother disappears she is pulled into the world of these three
people. They're Shadowhunters; people who hunt demons. Her mother's
disappearance is linked to this world and Clary is determined to find out how to
bring her mother back. Meanwhile she finds herself arguing with Jace, an
extremely attractive if annoying Shadowhunter, and growing closer to him, even
as she wonders if she feels more than just friendship for her best friend Simon.
This suspenseful novel has everything: magic, self discovery, and a very
complicated love triangle. The plot is fast paced and the characters well
developed. City of Bones keeps you hooked with it's shocking twists and turns
until the very last page.
