The Gamboa Canopy Tour is a ‘must see’ for nature lovers when in Panama. The gondola ride is one of
the attractions provided by the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. You ride for 2 – 3 hours and travel 1.2 km
in the only cable car ride in Panama. There are 18 gondolas with a total capacity of 86 passengers,
including multilingual guides. Two of these gondolas hold 3 passengers plus guide, with space for a
wheelchair, and the other fit 5 people plus guide. Your guide will be happy to introduce the Mother
Nature’s wonders you will encounter.
After 20 minutes of ascent from the first station, you arrive at the crest of the hill where you will walk
up a path that leads to the Observation Tower, which has 10 levels on a spiral ramp. From the tower
you can take in the views of the Chagres River, the Panama Canal and an Embera Indian Village. And,
you can simply enjoy the fresh air.
2. According to the resort, you get the forest from a different perspective and take a close look from
above. You can be eye to eye with the birds and animals of the rainforest while sitting comfortably in
the seat of their Swiss-engineered aerial tram system. The aerial tour takes place within 100 hectares
of tropical jungle. The jungle will amaze you with a diversity of tropical flora and fauna.
For plant lovers there are species such as Balsa, Mangavé, Manglillo, Mountain Fig and Trumpet Tree.
Animal lovers can see Capybaras, Coatimundis, Howler Monkeys, Peccaries, Squirrels and Sloths.
Then there are the birds such as Momots, Parrots, Toucans and Trogons everywhere. Once you
descend from tree tops, there is more to enjoy. On the resort grounds are ecological exhibits
featuring butterflies, orchids and snakes.
The gondolas run from Tuesday to Sunday. On weekdays the schedule is 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 2:00
p.m. and 3:30 p.m. On weekends and holidays the schedule is 7:30 a.m., 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:30
p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The cost for the aerial tram and the ecological exhibitions is $50.00 per person.
The tram only is $40.00 per person. The Gamboa Rainforest Resort is located in Gamboa, Panama,
approximately one hour by supplied van from Tocumen International Airport and 30 minutes from
Panama City.
One final note, on the drive to Gamboa, you will pass the Summit Botanical Gardens and Zoo. This is a
great place to continue your nature adventure. At the Summit you can also see the endangered Harpy
Eagle, Panama’s national bird.
